Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Kirkland.
Hi Carla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been interested in nails as a child. I started experimenting with designs and nail art as a teen. I admired the work of my nail tech back in 1991 so I decided to go to nail school at night while going to college during the day. I became a licensed nail technician in August 1992 in Jacksonville, FL. I relocated to Orlando, FL in 1999. I’ve done nails at tradeshows such as Bronner Bros in Atlanta & Premiere Show in Orlando, etc. I’ve worked for Color Club to demo their products at various events. I’ve taught my techniques privately and in group classes with other prominent techs like Mindy Hardy of Orlando and Poochie of Atlanta. I still absolutely love what I do nearly 30 years later!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, not at all. Building a clientele is not easy. I had to market myself by running specials, handing out business cards, posting flyers, etc. Also, learning how to deal with clients and implementing rules was not an easy task. It was definitely a trial by error experience.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in handpainted nail art. I have a natural talent for art. Therefore, drawing and color coordination is 2nd nature. I am known for great customer service. I respect my client’s time and make them feel welcome. I am most proud of the clientele that I have built over the years. I have clients dead who have been with me for up to 22 years. What sets me apart is my ability to work without a drill. I can shape nails with exquisite perfection by only using a nail file. Most clients feel more comfortable with this technique.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I mostly like the variety of entertainment and food that we have here in Orlando. I dislike that we are so far away from the beach!
