Check Out Dorka Jones’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorka Jones

Hi Dorka, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Some of my favorite childhood memories consist of me watching and studying the way my aunt would apply her makeup. When she would leave the room, I would dig through her makeup bag and repeat the same steps. I knew pretty early on that I would eventually end up in the beauty industry somehow! Right out of high school, I made the decision to attend Cosmetology School before trying any other career. After graduating, I realized there was no need to try anything else, I was exactly where I wanted to be! I spent some serious time buying makeup at Sephora, so much so, I decided to apply. Through my years working there, I developed a clientele. I was getting so much work on my own I knew I wanted to take the plunge. The turning point for me was getting a chance to work with an established on-location Hair & Makeup team. I took a leap of faith and decided to leave my solid job as a Consultant/Senior Educator to work independently. By word of mouth and lots of networking, I can proudly say I have been freelancing for the last four years.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most people would consider this to be a fun & glamorous industry, but quickly would realize the vast amount of obstacles one would face in the day to day operations. Learning how to create a business, building your kit, coordinating, networking, customer service, scheduling, etc., is not exactly the first things you think of when you hear someone say they are a professional makeup artist. But this is what goes on behind the scenes. Along with learning new techniques, trends, adjusting to different environments and client expectations. As an ever-changing industry, your efforts to keep up are pretty demanding.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Doing makeup goes far beyond the exterior. I strive to bring out each clients confidence, enhance their inner beauty and take one thing off their plate, even if it’s just for a day. One of the things that made me most excited about this industry is how many different avenues you can explore. From weddings, to photo shoots and tv! Within the last few years, I’ve navigated through them all and have become Internationally Published for my Beauty & Fashion work. Being knowledgeable in different products, skin types, techniques, and knowing when to apply which, helps to set me apart.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and take risks. With so much access through social media, there are easy ways to find other creatives in your area. Asking them to collaborate will help build your networking circles and give you content to work with. Not to mention it will be a great way to continue to sharpen your skills and practice new techniques. Assisting is another great way to grow & hopefully in turn maybe even find your dream mentor!
