Today we’d like to introduce you to Julio Lima.
Hi Julio, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always wanted to be an architect but quickly found out I couldn’t hack the math when I got to college. Walked out of “Advanced Trigonometry” and never went back. I switched my major to biz admin but then I remembered I hate wearing ties and shaving. So I got my degree in Fine Arts at UCF. I started working at a small print shop while I was at UCF, and that turned out to be my first full-time job after I graduated.
From there, I worked at RY&P, a local advertising agency. Actually the biggest one in town at that time in 1983. I was there for eight years and worked my way up from junior production artist to senior art director. In 1991 I moved to Greenstone Roberts but was only there for less than a year. I started freelancing out of my house under the name “It! design”. In 1995 I joined forces with some friends to start PUSH – a full-service advertising agency. In early 2003 I went on my own again to start my current job as owner and creative director of SAY IT LOUD. We will be celebrating our 18th anniversary on St Paddy’s day.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never smooth in the advertising/design/creative industry. It’s not a 9 to 5 job. I’ve put in enough hours in my 38 years to last three lifetimes of, say if I was a banker. It takes a while to build a reputation, but once you can create a strong body of work [portfolio], it normally gets “smoother” after that. Even today, as an agency owner, there are daily challenges.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a creative director, which gives me the responsibility to guide my creative activists [co-workers] to come up with “creative” solutions to solve our client’s marketing and promotional objectives. We specialize in full-service advertising and design with a strong emphasis on B2B and consumer goods clients. Our specialty is trying to be louder than our client’s competition. Although I’ve done very well financially and have won many industry awards/accolades/honors, I’m most proud of my two sons and now my grandkids. I would say what sets me apart from others is not being afraid to fail by taking chances and not being shy with my obnoxious strong opinions on just about everything – thus the agency name SAY IT LOUD!
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I’ve learned that we can still function and run a successful business with most of our team working from home, but the personal interactions are missed and much needed. I miss being able to go places with the family, traveling, eating out, etc.
