Check Out Kandis Duval’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandis Duval.

Hi Kandis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My sister first introduced me to nail art when I was seven; immediately I was intrigued & wanted all sorts of nail art! She didn’t have the patience to put up with me so I took over making my own press on nails during middle & high school. I got my first job at 16 with that money, I started buying supplies, mind you I wouldn’t have a clue on doing acrylic nails until two years later. Fast forward after graduation, my mom would complain about me wasting my money & talent on nails. She told me to apply for my nail school which I completed but fear was still holding me. With a few hundred dollars to my name barely making it from paycheck to paycheck. Friends from social media were really encouraging me to make an Instagram &start posting my practice work. So bound with fear, I couldn’t even come up with a name for myself so I was given “donebykay”. December of 2018, I had three girls book with me all of them wanting to come at once! Turning my fear into good use, I practiced until 3am the next day making sure things went perfect. Since the day I chose courage, I haven’t looked back. Doing nails has blessed me with the opportunity to meet amazing souls. All glory to God!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! I struggled with putting my foot down and being firm in my word because I was too worried about potentially missing out on a client. All business isn’t good business. Being a small business owner, it’s easy to let the lines get blurred, while I want to remain personable and humble. It is very important to let my family and clients know I have need personal time. That way, I can dedicate my attention solely to one thing.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do acrylic nail extensions, my specialty being ombré thats what helped me get on the map. I’m most proud of my perseverance. I faced a lot of people telling me nails “isn’t a real job” making me feel less of myself. My creative flamboyant & blinged out nails sets me apart my clients know they can give me an idea and I’m going to run to the hills with it.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
No matter how bleak or unattainable your dreams may seem never abandon it. Also, don’t rush to get to the next level because “you should be there already” take your time. Think of this season as a strengthening time period.
