Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Taylor.
Hi Marissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey began when I was just a kid. My mom was a wedding photographer and definitely gave me whatever creative and artistic spirit I have! One day, she gave me her old camera and I couldn’t put it down. It was a hobby at first until high school rolled in and I did photography as a part-time job. Flash forward to my second year of college where I felt so discouraged because I couldn’t fit into any cookie cutter major. That was when my parents encouraged me to drop out and pursue photography full-time. Photography had always been a passion of mine, but I never imaged dropping out of college for it. It was a leap of faith and a little scary; however, it was the best decision I’ve ever made!! Here I am three years later and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else!!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been blessed to have encouraging parents and friends to help along the way. Nonetheless, the biggest struggle would be self-doubt. It was largely present in the beginning of starting full-time. I’ve certainly faced opposition from people & even bullying due to my age as a young business owner. Many people have looked down on me, which made me question whether I was good enough for this job. However, through time, experience, and investing in myself, I’ve been able to grow through those troubles. I also have so much to thank my husband for, who’s been there to encourage me and lift me up every step of the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in wedding and lifestyle photography!! That includes engagements, families and portraits. I’m most proud of where I began (landscape portraits!) to now having so many weddings under my belt. My absolute favorite thing about photos is how you’re able to completely freeze a moment in time. I’m not all about the “perfect photo” instead of about the moments that are most important to my clients. Not fabricating an image to fit what I want, but capture a timeless moment for the couple or family that matters most to them. I know for me, those are the memories that are lasting.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Such a good question!! For years I collected photographs. Photographs of my grandma’s old cabin or the trips my family would take when I was little and couldn’t remember. I collected all the old and photographed new, so I could make a collage that fit my entire bedroom wall. I lit up the wall with string lights so that every night, I could sit and reminisce on all the moments I wanted to remember forever. So, I’d say my favorite memory was the collection of all my favorite memories.
