Check Out E’Monique, Ethel Monique Williams’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to E’Monique, Ethel Monique Williams.

Hi E’Monique, preferably Ethel Monique, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up as an only child in Miami, Florida, I didn’t have imaginary friends. Sure, I could embellish entire conversations with myself to keep my little ADHD brain happy but my dreams have always been rooted in the creation of memories. I would monopolize the family camcorder on holidays or designated myself as the sole photographer for our family vacations. Even from an early age, I understood the power of memory and the importance of these digital trinkets for our mind’s scrapbook.

After losing my mother, Shirley, a Miami Gardens community leader and social media check-in queen, to cancer in February of 2020 and then my paternal grandfather, Newman, to Alzheimer’s three months later, I wished I had more photos of our time together. Photography allows me to gift others with what I want more of, and through that, I am healing from the losses as well.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I had never seen myself as a professional photographer. My family always told me that my photos were ‘great’ but I often chalked it up to general familial support. It wasn’t until I got hired on as a photographer at a local Orlando theme park that I began to see myself as a professional. After networking with some colleagues and gaining encouragement, I reached out to the same friends and family members that had always supported me and started building from there. There were a few mishaps with my earlier sessions that have helped me establish standards for myself and my business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I pride myself on capturing the intricacies of emotion through candid photography, which is why I love couples, family, and theme park sessions. From capturing a blossoming romance to a child’s first meet-and-greet with their favorite character to magical proposals, Orlando is so ethereal and it truly comes alive with the people it caters to. From family theme park sessions to enchanting wedding events, I love it all. Photography is truly a labor of love for me and I am just happy to capture every magical moment!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Ooh! Definitely decorating with my mom. I was in high school. I had a rough, emotional day at school, walked home from my bus stop in the rain, and came home to the pleasant smell of Pillsbury holiday cookies. I yelled for my mom through the house, saw the tree box in the living room with ornaments scattered on the couch, and found her putting a fresh batch of cookies into the oven. I loved decorating for the holidays with my mom. It was the most magical, special, revered time I cherished with her and is my happy place.
