Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazzie Renee Washington. Them and their team share their story with us below:
In 2014, emotions were high from injustices that were occurring throughout the United States as well as our city. Jazzie Renee Washington was searching for an easy way to find and support the black businesses in the community, however, her search fell short. She then decided to start a new Facebook Group called “Black Business Orlando.” The news of the new group quickly grew and she discovered that other people in the city had this same urge. As she began to meet new and existing business owners she wanted to assist in the development and advancement of black businesses so she began hosting monthly workshops where different experts would come out and teach small business owners. She then decided to grow her team and build a BBO Executive Team to help lead these initiatives and continue to support and advance small minority-owned businesses in Orlando.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
By far, the biggest struggle that has been encountered is COVID-19. The majority of our events have happened in person, from networking events, townhalls, and our annual Black Business Summit. We are still limiting our activity in person until the Covid numbers go back to a downward trend. We’re looking forward to our Black Business Summit in 2022. Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I would not say luck had a role in my life. I am a child of God and I also believe that the energy you put out is the energy that you will receive in return. So I strive to always put out positive energy, do right by people, and stand up for what’s right!
