Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Hickman.
Hi Amy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Amy Hickman! Ever since I was a little girl (I know, cheesy lol but true) I would just it in front of my vanity, practicing curling my hair in different styles all the time! When I got into high school, I would beg my friends to allow me to color their hair. Some turned out great, some not so much. But it was all a learning experience, plus I loved making my friend feel good about themselves. So I knew right then and there I was going to become a cosmetologist! After high school, I didn’t even take the summer off, I went straight into Cosmo School. I just feel in love with everything about it. While I was in school, I worked at Beauty Allaince supply store. I finally graduated. Went to work at a big salon in Ocala. That was nice for a while, then I decided to come back to my hometown and work as a booth renter. I have literally worked at every salon in my town. Nothing wrong just needed some change here and there, gaining experience, searching for something.
On my 12th year of doing just hair behind the chair. I decided it’s pass time and I need to open my own place! So I jumped out of my comfort zone and I went for it !! Started out small in a 600 sq ft space. We out grew of that place really quickly. Now four years later we are now opening up a bigger location the same hometown. I have always kept in mind that you should have five years’ plans after that have more five years’ plans. Keep the hustle going! This is the key to success! So in my 16 years of my career, I have made multiple friends in the hair industry, full book clients, owned two salon (out grew one), just so thankful for everything I have and achieved. I also have a lot of support from my husband, my parents, my clients and co workers.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
YES!! Building a Clientele!! When I started doing hair, we didn’t have social media to advertise. We had the internet that made that weird noise to get to AOL messenger lol. I walked up to strangers and introduce myself and hand them my business card or I had to put advertisement into the local newspaper. I relied a lot on word-of-mouth reviews to get more clients. I would advertise sales and discounts to drawl more clients in. It was a struggle, I would beg to have a full book back then!
