Community Highlights: Meet Cyndi Shifrel of Orlando Wedding & Party Rentals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyndi Shifrel.

Hi Cyndi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a shy, quiet girl that was raised in a small town in North Carolina. After graduating from high school, I went to college in TN to pursue a degree in music. Years later, in 2000, after starting a family, I opened my own piano studio, where I taught 40-45 students out of my home each week. In the middle of the Great Recession in 2008, my husband and I decided we wanted to open our own rental company as we saw a need for a rental company in our area that focused on providing great customer service and superior products. We were able to scale our business very quickly and after two years of teaching piano and running Orlando Wedding & Party Rentals at the same time, I decided to quit teaching altogether to focus on the growth of our company.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Just like other business owners, I have seen my share of challenges as a businesswoman. One of the main challenges, which has also been a blessing, was that we were always outgrowing our warehouse space as we are consistently adding more rental products to keep up with the demand for new trends in events. In October 2019, we were able to move into our dream space in Lake Mary, a 24,000 sq. ft. facility, which has allowed us more room to continue to grow and expand our product offerings. The hardest struggle I have ever faced as a business owner came in March of this year when my company and all the other companies in the event and hospitality industry were basically shut down due to COVID. We were on track to have our best year yet, and all of that changed in March. The original projection was that we would be down 70%, but I am so pleased that we have been extremely fortunate and blessed to have remained busy since September, and we will only be down about 25% for the year.

We’ve been impressed with Orlando Wedding & Party Rentals, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Since 2008, family has been at the heart of our business. Treating our customers like family and bringing a fresh approach to the event rental industry is so important to us. We believe that each client deserves high-quality event rental options and exceptional service, no matter what event they’re planning from weddings to parties to corporate events to social affairs and more! We pride ourselves on being responsive, focusing on the customer experience, and continually growing our inventory of one-of-a-kind products.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I started Orlando Wedding & Party Rentals in 2008 during a time of economic crisis and uncertainty. It was a huge leap of faith that involved taking out loans and renting a storage space in the hopes that we would be successful. I am a firm believer in taking risks if you want to be successful in life and in business. One of my favorite quotes is by Erin Hanson, “What if I fall?” Oh, but my darling, What if you fly?” Risk-taking can open up a whole new world of possibilities if you let it!
