Community Highlights: Meet Dea Cristiane Prieto of Corpus Waxing Center & Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dea Cristiane Prieto.

Dea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
To tell you a little about my story, I need to go back to 1997. The world of the internet with its chat rooms was booming when in one of them, I met my current husband. After 1 year between his comings and goings from the USA to Brazil, we decided to get married, and that’s how I arrived in the USA. In 1999, our first and only child was born. During this period of arrival until the first 3 years of my son’s life, it was a time of great cultural change and, consequently, the learning of a new language. My training was in the accounting area, but with the possibility of a new world in front of me, I thought about changing, and in this way, I entered the area of aesthetics. I studied and worked in Miami for a few years. My husband, who was from the construction area, traveled a lot, and I ended up spending a lot of time alone with our son. Since his work was in the Orlando/Ocala/Tallahassee/Jacksonville area, we decided to move to Orlando in May 2006. Since our first day in this city of Orlando, I can say for sure that I was born for this city. Orlando is my place in the world. It was here in Orlando that I decided to take a very important step and dive permanently into the hair removal area. I can’t explain because I can’t find a concrete answer, but since my adolescence still in Brazil, I’ve always had a charm for waxing. Since I started working professionally in this area, with each new day, I have been trying to improve myself with new techniques. Until March 2010, I founded my company Corpus Waxing Center & Spa. The United States had gone through a very large recession, and my husband and I were financially attacked by the recess. It seemed that there was no light at the end of the tunnel, but I consider myself a phoenix; I gathered all my shards and immersed myself in my dream. I started my studio in one tiny room in a hair salon, and alone without any resources, I created a website and advertising and kept going. A year later, I already had a space that was mine and worked every day. The following year I saw the need for a larger and better space and to recruit and train people to help me. Today, 12 years later, I look back and see everything I built, a reliable business with excellent employees and a database of more than 6 thousand clients; we have a 5-star rating, serving men and women with high quality and professionalism. We just relocated to a much more modern and integrative studio. If there is any advice, I can give that everything a person proposes to do, even if there is no financial resource, regardless of anything, do so with dedication, love, enthusiasm, professionalism, education, clarity, and cleanliness. Don’t just think about the financial return, because when it’s good, naturally, the financial return comes. Today I live 100% from waxing. During these last 12 years I have made several mistakes and finally got to the right way. Today Corpus Waxing is a strong name in the market, with customers driving from Tampa, Davenport, The Villages, Daytona Beach, Titusville, etc., to have their body and/or facial hair removal needs to be met by us. Parallel to all this, in the past 3 years, I’ve lost 100 pounds, and I know I’ve been inspired by a lot of women, so I decided to start a new career as a Certified Personal Trainee and Nutritionist coach. I believe my goal in life is to continue inspiring women to be courageous to jump into their dreams and look amazing in their clothes. I need to mention as well that I’m the very proud mother of a U.S. Marine who just re-enlisted to continue serving this wonderful Country.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every day was a different challenge. Being a woman, immigrant, and entrepreneur is not easy. Some days look like everything is on track; another day is a complete roller coaster. We have a lot of struggles including the lack of employees, the business going so slow, and a lot of competition. We need to be very creative and always think ahead to keep choosing good things.
