Community Highlights: Meet Kyle Sleeth of Floyds 99 Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Sleeth.

Hi Kyle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I retired from baseball in 2009, my wife Sarah and I looked at all kinds of opportunities, from pizza to wine shops. But it was a meeting with a friend of a friend where we first heard about Floyd’s 99 Barbershop. Floyd’s is based in my hometown of Denver. I had never worked in an office before, and I didn’t want to start. Floyd’s 99 was a way to still be around fun people and give that same energy that I experienced in sports. We were drawn to franchising because we saw it as a blueprint for success with a business model that works. Now, ten years into it, we have six shops open, one opening at the end of March, and we currently employ over 100 people. Our ultimate goal is to have approximately 10-12 shops in the greater Central Florida market.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Operating a business is rarely smooth. You hire the best people you can find and develop a core around them. Opening a barbershop is not at all like opening a restaurant. We don’t get that honeymoon phase of customers. In our industry, it starts slow and you just keep building and building. Which is why it’s so important to hire the right people. They help make up our brand and culture.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Floyd’s 99 Barbershop mixes excellent service with the new style appeal of an experienced and talented staff. From the diverse styles and personalities of our stylists and barbers to our signature poster wall plastered with a time machine of music legends and icons, Floyd’s 99 Barbershop is a place where the music is worth turning up, and where everyone can proudly let their individuality shine. We want each experience at Floyd’s 99 Barbershop to be as unique and authentic as the people who fill the shop. We offer a full menu of services for everyone, including haircuts, hair color, fades, beard trims, straight razor shaves, and signature massage shampoo, finishing every service with a relaxing shoulder massage. We provide a great service, a unique, high-energy vibe, and haircuts with an unbeatable value. On top of that, no two shops are the same – meaning the Floyd’s 99 Barbershop experience is truly one of a kind.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
We define our success on how we are able to make an impact on our community. Not only do we care about making a difference, our staff are intimately connected with the local charities, schools, arts, businesses, and other institutions as people who’ve grown up in these neighborhoods. We continue to partner with JDRF. Every August, at over 100 stores across the country, the Floyds family sells value books to benefit JDRF. To date, we have helped raise over one million dollars towards Type 1 diabetes. One of the proudest moments was seeing the employees from our six Central Florida locations, along with the entire Floyd’s 99 franchise brand, unite after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando on June 2016. We raised as much money as we could for OneOrlando, a local nonprofit organization that supported Pulse victims’ families and survivors. Floyd’s 99 Barbershops nationally raised more than $70,000 for that cause.
