Conversations with Donna Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Jones.

Hi Donna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello from Kiddles Candles! Kiddles Candles is run and operated by myself Donna Jones and my sons Soloman and Noah Jones. Our name Kiddles is a combination of the words kids and candles. Kiddles Candles was birthed in the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic. When our state went on lockdown, we wanted to get the children motivated into doing something fun and productive. Their father and I had recently started a custom furnishing business (Vine and Branches) so we wanted them to think about entrepreneurship as well. We’ve always encouraged the children to think outside of the box and to value the importance of working for the things they want in life. After researching, we decide that we would give candle making a try. There were many trials and errors along the way, but we hung in there, worked hard, and mastered our craft. As a mother, I couldn’t be more proud of the boys. They have learned so much since we’ve begun. Now they understand the value of hard work, responsibility, budgeting, perseverance, time management, and dependability. One of our family mottos is “grow where you are planted,” which simply means find a way to flourish and do good, no matter where the road takes you.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our journey has had its ups and downs, and though some days were hard, we do not regret them. The tough times taught us to lean on each other and they enabled us to grow as a family of little entrepreneurs. Around the holidays of 2020, we struggled to secure supplies locally, which meant that we would have to consider purchasing from suppliers out of state in bulk and incur shipping fees. Being that Kiddles Candles was in its infancy stage with little to no profit, a decision had to be made; should we plow through or blow the candle out? All three of us sat down and weighed the pros and cons of moving forward and decided that we would not give up on Kiddles! The children poured all the holiday profits they had made back into Kiddles. We ordered the supplies and committed ourselves harder than we ever did. We couldn’t have done it without the help and support of our loved ones, who kept purchasing candles even with a slight price increase. Their loyalty and words of encouragement fueled us in those hard days.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Kiddles Candles, we create eco-friendly handcraft soy products (candles, wax melts, tea lights, etc.) We specialize in clean-burning products that are free from carcinogens and other potential hazards. All of our products are created using clean fragrances, cotton wicks, and 100% natural soy wax that is grown in the U.S.A. We choose to use soy over paraffin due to its sustainability, clean and slow burn, which means our customers can enjoy their favorite candles a lot longer. They can also breathe easier knowing that we are providing them with safe home fragrance products.

What are your plans for the future?
At the present time, we are fine-tuning our skills and learning the inner working of a business. We would like to see Kiddles Candle grow into a local candle store in our community. The candle industry is a big business, but we have faith and we wholeheartedly stand behind our products. As we always say, “grow where you are planted”.

  • Our products start at $5
