Conversations with Georgia Culp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Culp.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I seriously never saw myself as a designer. I have always been an entertainer. I absolutely loved singing, dancing and performing on stage. In fact, I spent my 20’s training to be a jazz, tap and ballet dancer. I was born and raised in California. I studied acting in high school and that is exactly what I was going to be, “an ACTRESS.” Instead, I fell more into the background of tv shows and danced my way through Disneyland as a parade performer. However, as much as I loved working the scene, I wanted to do more. I decided to get a job on a cruise ship as a social host. I traveled through the Caribbean and ended up in Orlando, Florida. This is where I married, had kids, worked the 9 to 5 job and basically grew out of being an entertainer. However, several years of blissful married life, I ended up divorced and a single mom with two boys. I was already working a full-time job but needed to find a second job.

I ended up working at Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights as a Costumer. This is where I found out I can sew, design, and even draw!! I really felt like I found this new desire to create. I really wanted to pursue this newfound talent, so I enrolled myself into the International Academy of Design & Technology. I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising and started to focus on up-cycle design. My passion to save the environment started with the concern of fast fashion’s impact on our planet. The education I received was more than just learning how to sew a garment, I was exposed to everything about the fashion industry, the good, bad, and ugly. The impact the fashion industry has over our planet weighed heavy on me and I felt like I had to do something. I started by creating upcycle bags with once love T-shirts and then was inspired to create wearable fashion by using recycled materials. I have showcased my upcycle designs in The Festival Chocolates Coca Couture, A New View Upcycled Fashion Show, Trash 2 Trends, Earthday 2018, Earthfest 2019 and my designs have been displayed in the Orlando Science Center. I am currently working with the Mount Dora Friends of the Environment to showcase six new upcycle designs for 2021 Earthday on April 17 at Donnelly Park, FL.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have lived a very colorful life and very blessed to have met the people who have inspired me. I have been very lucky to be surrounded by family members who supported my journey and friends who cheered me forward. My life is filled with so much adventure, love, and heartbreak. These experiences have only given me strength to pull myself up when I am feeling down. My children give me life to stay strong. My mission to save the planet as given me a purpose in life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for my upcycle T-Shirt satchels and I do specialize in taking a once love T-shirt to create a fashionable piece. I am currently reselling online by sourcing clothing. Eventually, my goal will be to create unique clothing items by recycling used and abandoned clothing and recreating new and exciting pieces.
