Conversations with Jorge Aguilar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Aguilar.

Hi Jorge, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started bartending out of necessity. I moved to Orlando with my pregnant wife. I worked as a stocker at Universal Orlando’s Citywalk. I asked the bartenders if the money from bartending, though the money fluctuates, was enough to raise a family. Their response was always a “yes.” As a man that is the head of household and the only one that works, I instantly started learning this craft. I started by purchasing “The Bartender’s Black Book” and started to memorize the popular cocktails, such as “Margaritas,” “Sex On The Beach,” etc.. Through my work ethic, my supervisors allowed me to get behind the bar and learn the signature cocktails and help out the bartenders with basic cocktails whenever they got busy. I finally had the opportunity to apply for a bartender position when NBC Sports Grill & Brew was announced to open back in 2015. Although I wasn’t qualified, due to the little experience that I had, the hiring managers gave me a shot based on my knowledge. Fast forward a couple of years, and I’m in love with my craft. I do mixology at home, and due to that, I have had the opportunity to work at private events and work at a craft cocktail bar. My goal is to open my own bartending business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. When I first started, I used to mess up people’s drinks. I think that it was due to anxiety and nerves. I don’t think people understand how bad the pressure can get when you’re new and working in a popular place that has groups of tourists surrounding your bar with no real line structure. Multi-tasking and having patience with people are skills that you learn quickly in this industry or you won’t make it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a bartender and a mixologist hybrid. I bartend in a craft cocktail bar, and I also bartend in a sports bar. I bartend private events and specialize in crafting unique cocktails that are inspired by almost anything. I’m known for being creative and thinking outside the box. I’m proud of the circle of people that I surround myself with. These people are go-getters and are goal-oriented. I think what sets me apart from others is that no matter how much knowledge I have about mixology and bartending, I’m always going to be a student of my craft. This hunger for more knowledge drives me to better myself. I will never be stagnant in this industry.
