Conversations with Kristina Dixon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Dixon.

Hi Kristina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always loved to cook and bake. One day a couple of years ago, I was baking Holiday treats with my kids, and I had the best time creating different things, and they actually turned out amazing! It was then that something just felt right and I couldn’t get enough of it. That Christmas, my husband bought me my first cake decorating kit and that just fanned the flame even more! I started experimenting with cupcakes and then cakes. I was constantly on YouTube and Instagram watching tutorials and learning different ways and methods to do things. As time went on that next year I start my business, Kaked Up Kreations, and the rest is history!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not entirely. I have four kids and a husband. That’s a full time job in itself. I was pregnant with my youngest when I started my baking venture, so there have been some moments of being idle. I think my biggest challenge is juggling mom-life, life itself, and my business. Although I have found my rhythm when it comes to it all, I am still working to make the balance of everything easier for myself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am mostly known for my custom cakes, specialty cakes, and cupcakes! I can create cakes of all types & themes. When a client is placing an order for a custom cake, I always take my time to get a full & clear idea of their vision so I can make it come to life! I never duplicate custom cakes, only my specialty cakes that I regularly offer. One specialty cake that I am especially known for is my famous Cookies & Cream cake. My favorite type of cupcakes to create are rosettes. They’re so simple but so beautiful! I love creating many different styles of cupcakes though, they’re so fun.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Be patient with yourself. Don’t focus on the likes and follows. Just keep building your dream day by day. I remember when I first started, things seemed so slow, but I kept learning new ways to keep improving my skills, and I also listened to a lot of other experienced cake artists’ advice when it came to marketing, branding, etc. It can be discouraging when you feel like you aren’t progressing, but I promise that if you stay persistent and work towards your goal every day, it will happen. I am still learning every day and am nowhere near where I want to be. But I know I will get there. One day at a time! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF…even if no one else does. You are all you have at the end of the day, be kind and encouraging to yourself and you will thrive!
