Today we’d like to introduce you to Schiani Ledo.
Hi Schiani, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Los Angeles. I was raised in El Paso Texas. I bounced around between New York and Orlando, till I finally settled in Orlando. I was always quiet, shy, and a little anti-social. I always found comfort with a Walkman and a sketchbook. As an adult, I tried different fields. I loaded trucks for Fed Ex, I worked as a runner for lawyers, I painted houses, I even worked as a baker at one point. But I was always pining for a creative outlet. I finally started working as a full-time designer/illustrator and everything started falling into place. I have worked for different agencies in the last 20 years and just recently I took the plunge into completely freelance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it wasn’t a smooth road. It still isn’t, It’s hard. Because it’s worth it. My biggest challenge is walking away from a job and a stable paycheck and focusing purely on my passion for making art. I’m doing that now, and I find myself working twice as hard and twice as long. The compensation is twice as rewarding. Thats worth it for me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is inspired by mid-century spot illustrations and design as well as vintage sci-fi, comics, surrealism, DIY art culture, and the textural wonders of degraded print. I’m probably best known for my beer label art for Tactical Brewing Co. It’s a perfect match since they make some of the best hazy IPAs in town. I’m very proud of those, also I’m really proud of the mural work I’ve done around Orlando. Such as the “Mystic Mandrills” piece on Mill’s 50.
How do you define success?
Growth, within yourself and relationships. Doing what you love. And doing whatever it takes to continue to do the latter.
