Today we’d like to introduce you to Danae Stephens.
Hi Danae, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Florida from Michigan in 2009. I started photography full-time after I had my second child in 2013. I’ve always dabbled with it since I was in high school. I decided to buy a camera one day, offered free sessions on craigslist to learn – and now I have a studio downtown Eau Gallie Florida. I share the space with a florist – Fern and Curl Designs. I would never have thought I would be where I am today, especially going through a divorce when I first started my company. Trying to run a business as a single mom is hard work – but it’s so worth it. I used to wait tables and I decided one day that I was done, and I would never let anyone else decide how much I got paid ever again other than me. It was time to be my own boss and I’m so glad I kept pushing forward with my goals/dreams.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Going through a divorce, being a single mom starting a business, trying to stay financially stable – it was a rollercoaster for sure! But I wouldn’t be wear I am today if all of that didn’t happen. I’m so thankful for all the tough times now because it’s made me the strong boss woman that I am. I still have days where it’s not all rainbows and butterflies, but that’s life and running a business!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a lifestyle photographer – I specialize in branding, boudoir, and lifestyle shoots. I also do weddings, families, maternity, headshots, real estate – you name it and I do it. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come and everything I’ve learned. The one thing I love most about what I do is that I feel like you can always learn something new. There isn’t ever a point where you reach the top and your done learning – you can always grow. I feel like my personality and connection with my clients sets me apart from others. A lot of people are all business and don’t connect with the clients in any way. I try to relate with them as much as I can to make them as comfortable as possible. The main thing I love about shooting boudoir is hoping to make more confident women in this world – and show everyone how beautiful they are.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Get in front of the camera! No matter how you feel or what you look like – stop being so hard on yourself. People want memories of you to look back on. And updated photos is so important nowadays for you and your business!
