Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Perez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My passion for makeup came from watching my mother get ready and match her makeup with her clothes. Later on It was often I found myself using all the makeup and fashion tips my mom passed down to me. I was naturally attracted to makeup and fashion. In 2015 I suffered an ectopic pregnancy, which led to an emergency surgery and I was on bed rest for a while. I laid in bed for weeks, depressed, watching YouTube makeup videos. I started staying up late and recreating makeup looks.
During this time, my husband played a huge role and always encouraged me to follow my dreams. He saw the difference makeup artistry made in my life. It wasn’t long before my friends and family were requesting for me to do their makeup. In the beginning, I would often be very anxious and nervous for a client but once the person was in my chair, I would always be in my element. Creating art while connecting with so many beautiful souls. Sharing special moments and milestones with my clients. If it weren’t for these experiences, I would not be the professional makeup artist that I am today. Sometimes I feel like makeup even saved me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Along the way, the obstacles that I have overcome have been putting myself through full-time beauty school while also working at Mac part-time as a makeup artist. I was sleeping and breathing beauty. My time at Mac helped mold me into a professional. Mac was the stepping stone of me becoming a freelance makeup artist. Later on I took the opportunity to work at a medical facility so that I could dedicate my weekends to doing makeup. There were a lot of times where it was hard to choose between doing what I love and being financially stable, yet I was determined to achieve my goals. Regardless of the different hindrances, I came across in my journey as a Makeup Artist I became very experienced with the multiple opportunities I came to acquire.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a professional freelance makeup artist, I specialize in bridal and event luxury makeup. I also work alongside atouchoffierce which is a mobile hair and makeup team of women which services our clients on site. We specialize in working with a diverse community of women for example West Indian brides as well as South Asian brides. I am mostly known for using makeup to enhance features so they are very glammed up but still look and feel like themselves, a natural touch.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was a very quiet and independent girl. My mother was a single mother of three and I was the oldest. I mostly kept to myself and while being alone a lot. I enjoyed reading and arts and crafts. From this time until now growing into my creativity has continuously has made me happy.
