Daily Inspiration: Meet Shika Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shika Johnson.

Hi Shika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I was always with a camera. We are talking old school Kodak film cameras. I figured why I enjoy life when I can capture the moments to reminisce later. That was how it started. I loved keeping memories. As I got older, I started volunteering in my church. They always counted on me to take pictures. When I was a freshman in college in 2011, I attempted my first real photoshoot. Of course, I had no idea what I was doing. But I was determined. I joined the US Army, and that was when I took photography seriously. I became my Unit’s photographer whenever we had training, holiday events, redeployments, etc. I was the go-to soldier volunteering my skills to support my Unit. It brought me so much joy. Though my time was limited, I used every chance to better myself. I taught myself as much as I could. I’m here today because I never gave up on my dream to have my photography business. It has truly been a blessing.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey came with a lot of bumps in the road. Being the Army, I moved around a lot, so once I started to build some stability, I had to move and start all over again. At times I wondered if I just wanted to do this as a hobby and not pursue it all the way. I questioned myself and the quality of work. I was hard on myself at times.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Soshika Photography LLC I do all sorts of photography, but I specialize in editorial portraits. I am most proud of officiating my business and being published four times in the magazine. What sets me apart from others is when I have a client, I love to make sure my client is comfortable and not overwhelmed about posing. I often shoot. I always hear, ” I don’t know how to pose or what I am doing.” I love to make sure when I hit. I create a safe space for my client. That is how you get the best photos.
