Today we’d like to introduce you to Valentina Rodriguez.
Hi Valentina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I never saw myself pursuing a career in the creative field or becoming an entrepreneur, in fact, I went to school for political science and plan on becoming a lawyer one day. I discovered calligraphy by accident after receiving a basic kit for Christmas back in 2018 and quickly fell in love with the idea of creating keepsakes for couples around the world. The process hasn’t always been easy and as a young entrepreneur, there were a lot of problems I didn’t anticipate, but I’m ultimately grateful for all the amazing opportunities I’ve encountered, the struggles and growth! After much internal deliberation, I decided to make calligraphy my career in mid-2019 and haven’t look back since! I’ve gotten the chance to work with amazing couples, brands and organizations and spread love through pretty letters, talk about a dream job!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, in fact, it’s been very challenging at times, specially since COVID started. Due to the virus, all of my clients in 2020 had to either cancel or postpone their wedding/events and that obviously impacted me both emotionally and financially! Another struggle I’ve encountered is how many hats I have to wear in my business (most of which are often overlooked by others) and how much you actually need to learn and fail in order to be successful. It’s not just about being good at your craft or having a positive attitude, as a business order you have to learn marketing, accounting, PR, just to name a few and you have all the day to day responsibilities of an employee on top of the financial responsibilities of a CEO, which can be really hard to balance.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in calligraphy (both modern and traditional) and offer glass engraving and stationery services for weddings, corporate events and brand activations. I like to describe the art of calligraphy as both enchanting and personal and think of it as an experience that allows me to capture my clients’ essence and translate into ink and paper forever while allowing them to connect with their guests in an intentional and non-traditional way! That’s why I take pride in my nothing-but-stellar and stress-free customer experience, as well as my attention to detail and ability to create long-lasting pieces that my clients will cherish for years to come! When it comes to weddings, my passion for letters in addition to my love for happy endings, make my job very easy cause, after all, there’s nothing more rewarding than having someone trust you with the task of translating their story into words and I make sure every detail of their big day is as personal, magical and unique as their love!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think I’ve been lucky enough to create a job that makes me happy and fulfills me in every way possible and to work with amazing people that value and respect my art but don’t consider luck to be behind my “success” or lack thereof. At the end of the day, it comes down to how hard you work for your goals and how much you’re willing to sacrifice to achieve them, but I do consider myself very lucky to have the opportunities that I do!
