Daily Inspiration: Meet Brian Murphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Murphy.

Hi Brian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My painting journey started in the mid-nineties while working at a Design Firm in Southern California. I already had experience painting with watercolors and other mediums, but I had not painted with oil yet. I went out one weekend with a friend and coworker to Laguna Beach and did my first Plein air oil painting of Lagunas beautiful coastline. I was hooked, and I have spent the last 27 years developing my Plein air and studio oil paintings.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the challenges along the way have been developing my style and improving my technique while trying to build a business selling my artwork. Painting and building up my inventory of work is time-consuming enough but add to that scheduling art festivals, exhibitions, and teaching workshops, and weekly classes was very challenging.

I suppose you could say my art career was fairly “smooth,” but there certainly were many challenges, both creatively and from the business side. I think my years as an Art Director trained me to work under pressure and deal with very tight deadlines. This background made it easier to produce work under the pressure of tight schedule.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what is the ‘favorite’ thing about what you do or your career choice.
I would have to say teaching workshops in Europe has been one of the aspects of my painting journey that has brought the most satisfaction. Not only have I been able to experience traveling to Italy, Ireland, France, and Spain on several occasions, but the subject matter for my work has expanded with each trip. Travelling extensively throughout the US doing Art Festivals has also allowed me to paint a wide variety of locations. New and exciting painting locations make me feel like I did when painting en Plein Air that first time 27 years ago.
