Today we’d like to introduce you to Donita McCants.
Hi Donita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia. But I was born military from an army family. I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was five years old. I was a persistent child that turned into a persistent young woman! I went to the University of Georgia for my undergraduate studies where I graduated in 2011 (go dawgs) then went to Tuskegee University for vet school where I graduated in 2015. I’ve lived in multiple states and was in North Carolina after graduation then made my way to Florida a few years ago and I’ve never looked back! I am a small animal veterinarian that treats dogs and cats and I love all things surgery and medicine as well as emergency medicine. I am a mental health advocate because of my experiences with test anxiety and stress while in school.
And I also want to keep the awareness known about the issues with suicide and mental health in the veterinary community. I am also an advocate for inclusion and diversity by helping and mentoring the future veterinarians and STEM children! I want to show that science is cool and women in science and medicine is even cooler! I am a mother of a seven years old son and I am all about health and wellness! I enjoy working out and I am training for a bodybuilding competition!! I hope to continue to spread awareness and use my platforms on social media with my Instagram page “Ask Dr. Donita” to help as many pet parents across the world and locally by fulfilling my purpose and serving my community big and small.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Larges struggle for me was having my son while I was a junior in vet school. I was scared I was going to fail out but I was resilient and made it to the end with the help of my classmates and family. Then the largest test of my life came around and test anxiety almost overtook me. But I was able to figure out things about me that I didn’t know were contributing to my testing issues. So once I was able to get diagnosed and take control of my mental state, I was able to overcome that exam. And I love sharing my story so others know that regardless of what learning issues or studying habits you need to succeed, it doesn’t matter because as long as you get it done that’s all that matters.
We’ve been impressed with Luv-N-Care Animal Hospital of Windermere, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a small animal veterinarian in Orlando, Florida near the Windermere area. We are a small close-knit private practice that is full service. We complete full wellness, vaccines all the way to major surgeries, hospitalization and emergencies. We try to always be available as well as provide the best client experience possible! We are one of few hospitals in the area that offer laser surgery as well as laser therapy to our patients. We love to include our clients and patients on our social media and keep everyone engages and having fun together. We offer lots of specials all the time with new patient exams as well as free surgical consults! We are a fun group and most people feel like they have already known us forever because of the connections we make through our social media.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was participating in a fashion show when I was five years old.
