Exploring Life & Business with Margaret Bryan of Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Bryan.

Hi Margaret, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our wonderful adventure began 24 years ago at a little known fish camp on Lake Tohopekaliga called East Lake Fish Camp. Airboating on the lake was a way of having fun on the weekends with family and friends. The campers visiting the Fish Camp would see how much fun we were having riding our personal airboat and ask us for rides. It didn’t take long for us to see how much they loved nature as much as we did. It took years of talking to journalists, travel agents and tourists to open up awareness that the headwaters to the Florida Everglades actually start in Orlando. We finally were able to convince visitors to give us a chance to experience the “Real Florida” at Boggy Creek Airboat Rides. In 2016, we became more than an airboat tour and changed our name to Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures. We made quite a few additions to the park such as a Native American Village, Gem Stone and Fossil Mine, Alligator Oasis, covered pavilions, tiki bar, swamp photo shack and a great restaurant – Boggy Bottom BBQ. Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures has become a “must-see” attraction for travelers from around the world. Our fleet of 12 airboats has taken several million nature lovers into the beautiful wetlands of Kissimmee.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggles? Hmm, I think the main obstacle we had to overcome was money. We asked our wonderful family to lend us the money to purchase our first airboat and was they were crazy enough to do it. We started with one six-passenger airboat in 1994. In the beginning, we worked seven days a week, 16 hours a day – including the holidays, without a day off for over two years. We lived walking distance from the Fish Camp, which made it easier, and we would regularly bring home airboat visitors for dinner. There were days in the beginning that we didn’t have any customers and weren’t sure we would make it. Packing meals and eating at the boat dock was common just to have some quality time with the family. The children grew up helping behind the desk, doing homework or spent hours fishing off the dock and collecting frogs and minnows to pass away the time.

We’ve been impressed with Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
No other company that has the knowledge, safety record and experience in airboat tours like Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures. We couldn’t have done this without family and friends supporting us along the way, especially our dedicated and hardworking employees that are like family to us. We have several tours such as our 30 or 60 minute tours in the day, be we specialize in the private, sunset and night tours. The Native American Village is Exclusive to Boggy Creek – We have Towering Chickee Huts that cover genuine artifacts and hand-made creations from the Native American culture. Everyone will appreciate the deeply rooted techniques of the forgotten Jororo Tribe that once thrived in Central Florida. Interactive lessons with Little Big Mountain are also a big hit with our customers.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
We are located on West Lake Tohopekaliga, which is on the headwaters to the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes that flow into the Florida Everglades. All of our airboats are driven by US Coast Guard Master Captains and our boats inspected and certified by them randomly and each year. We are safe and fun for all ages from 0-100!
