He has a strong career developing original content for major companies such as Nickelodeon, Walt Disney Company, and Universal Creative. RJ Temple is the Founder and Principal Creative Director for The Upbeat Imagination Workshop based in Orlando. They are an innovative multimedia company focused on creating original content for Film, Television, Attractions, Immersive Experiences, Games, and more. TUIW is one of the few African-American-owned themed entertainment companies in the nation. With a passion for innovation and a love for story, RJ has developed a stellar wheelhouse of diverse talent able to tackle any creative obstacle with quality and charisma that will make your brand stand out for years to come while putting Diversity and Inclusion into action empowering minorities in Creative Development.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a company from the ground up again during a Pandemic was tough. Themed entertainment is very competitive and coming in as a minority company in the middle of established vendors can be tricky. Yet, we believe in our approach to creative development and believe in self-empowerment while opportunities are still brewing. A lot of companies landed on the same playing field due to COVID-19, so this was the perfect time to level up and find out what we needed internally to get equal opportunities in the industry. It’s really about connecting with a client that is willing to give new faces a chance. I feel that the real struggles lay in the mindset of the industry and simply empowering more diverse talent will make the roads for creativity smooth and less challenging.

The Upbeat Imagination Workshop is an innovative mass media and entertainment company based in Orlando, Florida. From interactive media design to live-themed spectaculars, TUIW is leading the way to bring a new age of creative experiences for the whole family to enjoy. We handle a lot of unique forms of design such as 2D and 3D design, illustration, Music Composition, Creative Writing, Project Management, Architecture, Show Set Design, Animatronic Programming, Casting, Filming, Costume Design, and even Post Production What makes our company so unique are the humble beginnings in theatre. We created dozens of stage plays around actors and puppets that gave us much experience on how to intentionally create content to engage people from all walks of life while organically designing our approach to multimedia.

We also developed a lot of content around mobile games that helped shape our philosophy on how to utilize story and sound. That practice saturated our approach to other forms of media design and has been a great foundation for us as a company. Under The Upbeat Imagination Workshop, we have a Creative Studio that handles all levels of themed entertainment projects from concept to completion. We also have an original kids series called Jerry and The Upbeats currently featuring Upbeats TV highlighting our over 50 characters and their stories through music videos and music. We also are featuring cool new experiences around a new cast of diverse characters and even a fun new series launching on YouTube late spring called Milani and Swanson’s World. Other departments at TUIW include a fully functional fashion company called Figaro Apparel and a Diversity and Inclusion program focused on empowering minorities in creative roles for Themed Entertainment called Creative Quest Foundation.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
As a company, we learned to be patient with the creative process, learn from mistakes, and never forget that though we have many responsibilities to cover, in the end, we are all storytellers. Making sense to the adventure is what we do for a living and everyday, we must continue to capture that essence to build more strength as a team.
