Exploring Life & Business with Shavon Sultan of Grey Orchid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shavon Sultan.

Hi Shavon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our family has always been clients or working for a day spa. The comfort you get from services, in taking care of yourself, and the joy a spa can bring to people add amazing benefits that everyone should have access to in their community. When we decided to open Grey Orchid, we did so by looking from two unique viewpoints, the client and the worker. I have worked as a receptionist previously in the industry, so I was familiar with the spa environment. Carrie, who is my mother and best friend, was a lifelong client, so she had ideas and benefits to add from a client’s perspective. Together, we came up with GREY ORCHID. The concept of GREY ORCHID is a blend of a resort-style spa in a day spa setting. When you come to GREY ORCHID, you are not just a membership number or a service client. You are a family member. We aim to go above and beyond, so your treatment with us is not just a visit but a breakaway and haven from your everyday life. Our name and logo go further into our philosophy. We got to where we are today by genuinely loving what we do and a lot of hard work. I know everyone says how glamorous the beauty industry is, but to make it in this incredibly competitive field, you must have the passion and a lot of hard, meaningful work. Success does not grow overnight; it grows from a lot of trial and error and moving forward to the vision you want.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a roller coaster of a ride! As in life, everyone has an idea of what it is supposed to be, how things are supposed to work out or change for the better… Then life happens and adjusting to reality and life’s surprises are not always as smooth as you would think. COVID-19 would be an example of any business. The same with any new business, whether you are opening another branch or starting from scratch as we did. Some of the struggles along the way would be my biggest strengths now. Struggles mean adjusting, adapting, and growing. I came from a higher education career track and pivoted into the director of a small business track. That alone has its challenges with learning skills that I did not necessarily have access to learn in my previous career. For me, some of those struggles were learning how to respond quickly and run toward the problem to resolve it and realize you are your own (business) advocate for growth and exposer. Carrie has been an amazing foundation for this company and has helped us to grow into who we are today. We both continue to adapt and grow together as she supports me and GREY ORCHID moving forward. Overall, the struggles are what makes working for a family business so exciting. Yes, there are days when we question our abilities, but we always manage to impress ourselves when we look back and see how far we have come from each previous challenge. Regardless, the struggles make you appreciate everything you come from and are heading towards. For example, GREY ORCHID has just celebrated it is one year anniversary in September and its second year in a row of winning Best of Winter Park Spa from the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce.

We’ve been impressed with GREY ORCHID, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GREY ORCHID sprouted from a family coffee table talk one morning. The original discussion was aimed to improve our service relations between clients and staff; however, we later found out that what we really need is a day spa that is different than anything else out there. With so many day spas and franchises watering the field of what a true spa is supposed to be, we decided to bring back the elegance and luxury that was lost amongst most of the trade; with an aim for our clients to truly feel the relaxation and health benefits of a spa. Of course, there are the Resort Spas. However, those are so far away and often disconnected from a client’s everyday life. So, we thought, how can we combine a full day spa with the luxury of a resort; and we now have the GREY ORCHID. A small family-owned business that is looking to make a stand in our community. Our name is as personal to us as our concept. We wanted something that was unique yet meaningful, which is how we designed our logo. The lion and crown symbolize our family. The Orchid represents our services, while Eucalyptus represents our signature scent, and our aromatherapeutic blends in each of our services. All of it blended into the symbol of our name, the very stamp of our legacy. Our name is created with the same intention. The Orchid is exotic, vibrant, and luxurious. What better flower to represent our new concept and the quality of services that we provide. The color Grey is a shade mixture of both black and white, symbolizing our hybrid concept of a day spa with a resort atmosphere. Grey is also the most complementary shade, neutral, elegant, and powerful within its own right, representing our clients. All our services are treatments geared for your mind, body, and soul. We are about keeping and enhancing your natural beauty to promote a healthy lifestyle. That is why all our services are geared to relaxation, but with treatment benefits. The same can be said with all our retail products. Carrie and I vet every product that we offer, testing each product for a period before adding them to our retail line. This assures us that we know the product and can speak on behalf of the products from experience and offer more than what just the labels tell.

Any big plans?
If it were the beginning of 2020, I would say something way more ambitious, but I would say our near future plans focus on survival and remaining stable for the next year as the community works through this pandemic. We do anticipate healthy growth in 2021 and will continue to fine-tune our concept. We are looking to expand our group bookings and continue to provide a safe environment for our clients. We also will continue to build our relationships in the community and partner up with organizations like the Winter Park Chamber of commerce and the Alford Inn to strengthen the community as a whole. I hope to also work with other small businesses to support and grow with one another, especially during this dyer time.
