Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Brown.
Hi Jasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida but moved to Chesapeake, Virginia my sophomore year of high school. During that time, I was always asked, “What are your plans when you graduate?” I knew once I graduated high school; I wanted to go to college but I never put much thought into what I truly wanted to do. Fast forward to my freshman year in college. I was scrolling through YouTube and I came across this video on “How-To” eyebrows. I never wore makeup except for that one time which was for my senior prom. My brows were always shaped but never filled in so I thought “Why Not?” I went to a well-known and established makeup store and purchased Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade in the shade “Dark Brown”. Without making any additional stops, I went directly home and finished my brows. I loved the look so much it became part of my daily routine. At that moment, I knew and fell in love with what this makeup enhancement had done for me. It not only changed my look but I also knew that with compassion, hard work and dedication I could create that same look for other women. I became focused; I started to familiarize myself with other products and brands and eventually, I mastered my face. My friends started noticing my polished look and wanted me to give them that same professional finish. Initially, I was a little hesitant but quickly became very comfortable with their faces and perfected their preferred look. After much thought, I began to contemplate; “why can’t I do this for a living and be successful at it?” After all, I loved doing it. To enhance my skills, I applied at MAC cosmetics; making this my first cosmetic job and worked as a part-time freelance artist.
After working there for a while, I made the transition to NYX cosmetics. I was hired as a part-time artist, proving myself in the position I became a more refined and confident artist. I was promoted at NYX in which allowed me to have more responsibility then ultimately being put in charge of product training. I continued to be focused as I was still a full-time college student. NYX afforded me the opportunity to perfect my craft, grow professionally and become the type of artist I knew I could become and at the same time provide the level of service my clients deserved. I decided to walk away from NYX to pursue my dreams and aspirations as an artist. I Did It !!! I graduated from University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication in Spring of 2019. It had its challenges but I did it and continued to be a makeup artist at the same time. A few years later, I have done makeup for over 500 clients and I currently have my own eCommerce store where I sell products to those who are unable to get serviced by me. I am very proud of how far I’ve come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t always a smooth ride because it was a constant battle with what makes sense to society or what I truly wanted to do. Being born to a single mom, there were a lot of sacrifices my mother made in order for my brother and me to experience some of the greater things life has to offer. However, my mother always taught me to follow my dreams, and even if there is a tough road, you will get there as long as you don’t give up. I’ve always had this fear of failure. I never wanted to fail until one day…. I did. Well, at least to me it was what I thought was failure; and when it happened a sense of courage and determination came over me. I told myself it was okay and used it as a learning experience. It also keeps me creative. I figured out what doesn’t work and think of ways that will. I use this method daily with whatever I am doing.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about MakeupByJvsmine, LLC?
MakeupByJvsmine, LLC is me as an artist and what people know me for. It is who I am and I have always demonstrated that in all I do as a person and as an artist. My craft ranges from natural soft looks to bold and defined looks. I have shipped to over 30 states since opening my website on July 2, 2020. I am most proud that I am a female entrepreneur who knows that I could not have done it without my clients and customers that support me each and every day.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First, I give all praises to God. Without God none of this would be possible. My relationship with Him is unmatched. God continues to close doors that are not for me and opens many that put me on the right path. God has and continues to work through me as He orders my steps. Secondly, my family. Without them, my thoughts of pursuing my dreams and turning them into reality wouldn’t be possible. They continue to push me and support me with whatever I decide to do in life. My friends share, promote, purchase and like all of my content and products. They do it because that is how they show their support especially when I don’t ask them to do it. Lastly, my supporters. I am shocked at how strangers support me without them even knowing who I am and it’s what keeps me going. My very strong support system is what keeps me going and it is very apparent in everything I do.
