Hidden Gems: Meet Ken Siu of Rockstar Axe Throwing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Siu.

Hi Ken, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Several years ago, I organized a bachelor party in Canada, looking for unique Canadian activities – one of which was axe throwing. Our group was comprised of a variety of guys of all ages yet we all had an absolute blast throwing axes. We attempted to go axe throwing again once we were back in town but realized the closest facility (at the time) was in Atlanta. I opened the first axe throwing venue in Central Florida in 2018 in downtown Orlando, which was extremely well received in the community, but since that beginning, have always felt that entertainment activities were lacking in the East Orlando Area. Fast forward a couple of years and the goal to bring such a unique and exciting activity to the East Orlando/UCF area became a reality with Rockstar Axe Throwing opening its doors to the general public in 2020!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening in 2020 has certainly included its share of struggles! Permitting/Inspections and our opening to the general public were delayed by nearly three months due to county COVID-related mandates. In addition, UCF is still nearly completely virtual and many nearby business are still remote, reducing our reach in the local community.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At our core, we provide a one-of-a-kind experience unlike anything else. Birthday parties, corporate team building events, bachelor/bachelorette celebrations – it’s a unique way to celebrate any special occasion. Our weekly leagues are also a terrific way to meet new people and pick up new axe throwing skills and earn a shot at the Axe Throwing World Championships on ESPN! We provide mobile axe throwing for offsite events such as festivals, weddings and fairs. We’ll provide everything you need to be a ROCKSTAR in no time at all! As a small business, we also understand the importance of supporting our community since they do so much to support us. We are heavily involved in outreach and support to local schools, the University of Central Florida and its various student groups, law enforcement, first responders and many others. We have partnered with several non-profit groups as well for fundraising efforts and continue to look for new opportunities to do so. Many people have tried axe throwing, but there are still so many that have not. It’s our goal to make sure everyone has a chance to experience this awesome activity. I’ve yet to meet someone I couldn’t teach to throw an axe – it’s definitely something anyone can learn in a short amount of time and we’re here to make sure everyone has an AXE-cellent time!

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Use your own personal network and tell people about what you are doing. You never know if your friends/family/colleagues can advise you, point you in the right direction or connect you to someone who can help. Also, don’t be afraid to fail – if you have an idea that you think would be of benefit, execute it and commit yourself to always improving on your products/services.

  • Regular session – $25 per person per hour
