Inspiring Conversations with Candice Craig of BAMF Comics and Coffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Craig.

Hi Candice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My husband, David, and I decided to take a chance after decades of dreaming about opening a shop. He left his career in the building industry and I left teaching. We wanted to bring back the old-school feel of a comic book and book shop that also encourages community and companionship. We wanted to create a place where people feel accepted and are able to find their tribe. A place that inspires creativity provides opportunities for friendships and creates memories.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been struggles, of course. I cannot imagine a small business starting out and having a smooth, trouble-free beginning. There were definitely sacrifices made early on and moments of hand-wringing and tears! But we made it through the first year and began to see growth. Then, at about one and a half years into it, we closed for six weeks during the mandated pandemic shutdown. Rent delay or abatement was not an option for us and we were, like so many businesses over the course of this pandemic, terrified that we wouldn’t re-open. And then our incredible community supported us and kept us going!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about BAMF Comics and Coffee?
We are a comic book and coffee house that happens to be that “third place” for many folks. A place to decompress and distress. I am incredibly proud of our coffee and food. Everything is made fresh. Our baked goods are scratch-made, our cold brew is made in-house NOT from concentrate, and our coffee is ridiculous! We serve Panther Coffee and offer specialty and signature drinks alongside the standard espresso fare. I would say that our shop’s vibe is unlike any other and that sets us apart. It’s conducive to creating connections and positive feelings. It is hard to explain it… You just have to come and hang out in it. I think that is what we are known for genuine community. I am proud of the direction of our growth. The shop is constantly evolving. I am beginning to increase our prose sections as we are becoming a full-on book store in addition to comics and graphic novels. I am also working to grow our children’s book section to provide more unique choices for young readers. As a former reading teacher, I believe in the power of reading and the positive benefits of instilling a love of reading in kids. A book is a handful of adventure, after all. We are comic books, vinyl albums, collectibles, and serve damn tasty coffee.
