Inspiring Conversations with Demetria Sloan of Vantage Point Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetria Sloan.

Demetria Hill Sloan is an award-winning entrepreneur, certified life coach, executive leadership coach, trainer, author, speaker, and outspoken motivator. She has worked with corporate executives, entrepreneurs, and individual leaders, striving to further develop the qualities, skills, and aptitude required for growth. Demetria grew up in the town of Thibodaux, Louisiana, where her parents met while attending Nicholls State University. Upon graduating from high school, she moved to the campus of Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans for the inaugural Howard Hughes Biomedical Scholars summer program and never lived in Thibodaux again. Demetria graduated from Xavier and went to graduate school at Tulane University, where she earned a Master of Public Health. This took her to Austin, Texas, to work for the Texas Department of Health (now Texas Department of State Health Services).

After four years in public health, Demetria shifted to the pharmaceutical industry, where she made her professional mark in sales and sales leadership. It was a promotion with Eisai, Inc., that brought her and her family to Orlando, Florida, in 2007. With nearly twenty years of experience in sales, training, and management, Demetria formed Vantage Point Coaching, LLC, in 2015, to leverage her passion for personal growth and professional development to help others achieve higher levels of performance and personal fulfillment. She also started Vantage Point Coaching to meet the leadership development needs of women just like her — ambitious, driven, and hard-working women of color who often rise quickly in their careers and find themselves stuck at an invisible ceiling or who realize the “golden handcuffs” of career success (i.e. high salary, bonus, corporate card, and company car) no longer serve their personal purpose or mission.

In 2017, Demetria launched Vantage Point Coaching’s Spring Into Leadership Women’s Conference experience that meets the unique needs of women of color with high-quality content, and at a price point, they can easily invest with or without corporate support. Spring Into Leadership Women’s Conference is based on six foundational elements – leadership, self-care, entrepreneurship, health, wealth, and career advancement. Year-over-year, Spring Into Leadership Women’s Conference has continued to grow, attracting women from beyond the Central Florida community. It moved online in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and, this year, the conference will be an elevated virtual experience.

With roots planted firmly in her commitment to servant leadership and altruism, Demetria has over twenty-five years of uninterrupted service in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc(R). She has also freely given her time to serving in a variety of leadership roles in her community. Currently, she is the President of the Xavier University of Louisiana Central Florida Alumni Chapter, First Vice President of the Xavier University of Louisiana National Alumni Association, Board Trustee and Development Committee Chairman for the Orlando Science Center, a proud member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Orlando Chapter, and the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida. Demetria resides in Orlando, Florida, with her loving husband, Jeffrey, and two children, Devin and Jasmine.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Obstacles or opportunities – they depend on one’s mindset. I choose a growth mindset and any challenges I face are opportunities to learn, pivot, and keep it moving. Like all small businesses, access to capital was the greatest challenge I faced in growing Vantage Point Coaching. Initially, I bootstrapped the business with my severance pay from my employer. Oh, yeah, I was fired along with 200 of my friends in 2015. It was the catapult I needed to walk in my purpose. I always said I would ride it until the wheels fell off, and in April, my company announced a restructure, which left me out of a job and in May, I incorporated Vantage Point Coaching. After completing my coaching certifications in 2016, women like Lena Morris and Felicia Haslom Davis invested in my services. They knew me. They knew my work ethic. They were willing to take a chance on my business which allowed others to do the same. We were chugging along, experiencing year over year growth, and then the pandemic hit. It required our signature event to move online. I lost a couple of training engagements contracted for that year that were huge wins. However, we leaned into our virtual environment and continued to grow. While all the planned revenue was not realized in 2020, we still ended the year in the black.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, / what are you known for?
Vantage Point Coaching, LLC, (VPC) is a boutique executive leadership and life leadership coaching company established in 2015. We understand that every situation or client has her/his/their unique issues and distinct story that deserves a customized strategy. As such, each strategy is developed to provide clarity and guidance in various aspects of personal and professional environments, based only on that particular client’s needs. I am known for “Inspiring Action and Igniting Change.”

What sets you apart from others?
People achieve meaningful results in a short period of time: truly life-transforming results, personally and professionally. We also are not formulaic. While we utilize tried and true coaching techniques, there is no one set formula because each person and/or entity is unique.

What are you most proud brand-wise?
The visibility and impact of the brand continues to expand. More people are coming to the VPC brand because they know the coaching is real, the results are real, and the impact is real. I am striving for VPC to be known and not just seen. VPC’s brand is built on authenticity and not vanity. In the future, I seek to expand the brand with a team of coaches and service providers, all under the VPC umbrella.

What do you want our readers to know about your brand, offerings, services, etc.?
Services provided by VPC for the individual client include packages focused on self-exploration, goal setting, and action planning from both a personal and professional standpoint. For business clientele, whether for-profit or non-profit, VPC offers multiple services to assist in employee development, increasing employee productivity and facilitation, and improving workplace communication. Our services and offerings are a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking to grow. We have a price point for everyone from our social media content, LIVE videos, conference, coaching agreement, or a long-term contract.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There are too many people to name! So I will only name a few: My husband has been a great cheerleader, sounding board, and grounding force, allowing me the space to grow this business. My children, Devin and Jasmine, have been event support personnel and really are the heart of what I do. I want them to know that it is okay to voraciously pursue your passion and walk in your gifts. Lena Graham Morris – I met Lena when I was volunteering at the African American Chamber of Commerce as an Ambassador. She was there when I launched my business. She was there when I came up with the idea for Spring Into Leadership. She has been a constant advocate, supporter, and even a client. Florida Department of Children and Families was one of my first large training contracts, thanks to Alger Studstill and Amanda Wilson. They entrusted me to help enhance their leaders. Every client trusted me with their innermost hopes, desires, and passions, allowing me to challenge their way of thinking, hold them accountable, and support them on their journey to personal and professional fulfillment.
