Inspiring Conversations with Glen Turchin of Otus Coffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glen Turchin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I fell in love with roasting coffee back in 2017 when I bought a popcorn popper to roast coffee in on my stovetop. Three months later, I had a commercial coffee roaster arriving to my house, and Otus Coffee was born. From 2017 to early 2020, Otus coffee was my side hustle. I started to grow my customer base through my true passion of sourcing and roasted great coffee from all over the world. I would come home daily from my day job and roast coffee late into the night. Once Covid hit, I lost my day job and my dream of becoming a full-time roaster came true! I then grew the business 4x since that time and have not looked back.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s has been quite a grind (no pun intended) in many ways! Not only having zero experience in roasting coffee from the start, running a coffee roasting business involves so much more than just roasting great coffee. In such a competitive industry, it’s important to have some history of past success and accounts to score new, larger accounts. In order to win my first few accounts, I really had to get creative in many ways and learned a lot.

We’ve been impressed with Otus Coffee, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Otus Coffee is a family-run coffee roasting business that started from our garage. We focus on meticulously sourcing great coffees and then roasting each and every coffee countless times to ensure we present that coffee in the best way possible. We also want to make sure that every piece of the supply chain is compensated properly as so many coffee farms are abused in this industry. We want to make sure that every cup of coffee or bag we sell is taking care of all farmers. We also THRIVE on collaborating with other small businesses and love learning and working closely with others to create outstanding coffee products. We focus on bags of roasted coffees and cold brews.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Love and passion for coffee. This includes the final product as well as the process. From the way the farmers grow and harvest the coffee all the way to how the barista or customer brews the coffee for consumption. Each piece along the way is vital to the final cup being enjoyable, and we love being a part in the entire process! We are obsessed with learning and applying/adjusting our business to fit the needs for the industry as a whole, not just the margin on the final product.
