Life & Work with Anais Placencia and Armando Cabrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anais Placencia and Armando Cabrera.

Hi Anais and Armando, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are a couple-owned business. Our passion for picnics started in high school, where most of our dates consisted of picnics. We could not start OLP until our senior year of college because Armando attends the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. I attend the University of Central Florida. The pandemic allowed him to complete his courses virtually, which enabled us to start OLP because we were both living in the same city for the first time since high school. We wanted to provide a service we felt many people are in our city desired, luxe picnics. Our customers are the best part of the job. They have all been so lovely and appreciative of our services, which motivates us to keep going. Our goal is to provide customers with a personalized luxe picnic experience at an affordable cost. Currently, we specialize in picnics for couples, but we are expanding to large group picnics this year and hope to keep growing in the future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of our struggles along the way have been managing our student and work life. We both are full times students and have another job aside from managing OLP. Designing the right setups was one of the biggest struggles because we wanted to provide a luxe picnic experience without making our customers pay a ridiculous amount. Finding the appropriate locations was also one of the struggles because certain park locations have stringent guidelines, which basically prohibits us from setting up there.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Armando: Apart from OLP, I am currently a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating this May with a degree in mechanical engineering. I plan to pursue a career in engineering design where I can use critical thinking and problem solving on a daily basis to help my company while also expanding OLP in the process.
Anais: Currently, aside from OLP, I am one semester away from being a certified teacher. I will be graduating with honors from the University of Central Florida this May. I look forward to continuing both of my passions in this new year: teaching and OLP. -OLP allows us to bring our strengths together to be artists and create a service we love!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Don’t put a timeline on your company’s progress because you will see results if you put the time and effort into your craft. Accept the failures that come your way and embrace them as learning experiences.
