Life & Work with Deanna Barowsky of Oviedo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Barowsky.

Hi Deanna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Our story We are just two sisters that wanted something better for the client… Let me start from the beginning. Deanna and Darla Barowsky, two sisters who partnered together in a day spa to share a different way to relax and unplug from everyday life. One of us is an experienced Massage Therapist and the other has an MBA. Our hope and mission is to serve our community to educate you on the benefits of bodywork and enhance your well being through the various modalities we offer. Life can be crazy busy for all of us – with demands and stress from careers, kids, aging parents, health issues, school, traffic, world events, and constantly being plugged into social media. There seems to be a constant chatter in the world now that keeps us on edge. It’s with big hearts and helping hands, we would like to invite you to a different place to escape. Reserve time for yourself. Where the service is all about you! Stay awhile in the relax area and enjoy a glass of wine after your service. As an LMT with almost 20 years of experience and working from high end resorts to other places, I believe we have created an escape from life. A place you can exhale and be. No rush, no worries, just pure bliss. Space where your body can relax and your soul nurtured. We would love to share our day spa with you. When you support a small business, you are supporting a dream…

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The spa had to open quietly due to previously practicing massage in the immediate area. So, we were growing the spa from the ground up. The first year we had some extra capacity and tried adding a couple of other related spa services – spray tanning and acupuncture. Unfortunately, neither worked out long term. Our best advertising was word of mouth. In the 2nd year, we were seeing growth month over month. We were excited as we were sustaining financially as a business. As we were entering our 3rd year in 2020, Covid-19 hit. We could of done without the virus. After being shut down for a mandated eight weeks, people were slow to return to get a massage, despite all of the benefits. Before Covid-19 was named, our spa implemented the extra cleaning protocols recommended by the CDC. It was just the right thing to do, as we thought it was just a bad flu season. I am grateful to say that more people are beginning to come out again and services are in demand.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Massage Therapy is somewhat of a second career for me. I wanted to find a way to help others. Before the massage, I worked for Emery Worldwide managing people and cargo. As life takes a turn, I moved to Florida and trained as a home health aid, with thoughts of nursing before finding massage. Massage is what I was meant to do, along with energy bodywork. Clients come to the spa and return because of the wide variety of services offered – going beyond relaxation to helping with pain relief and lymphatic drainage after medical procedures. I’ve learned to wear many hats, became an expert on social media and marketing – but I am most proud of having a place of my own with employees who share my vision for the clients we serve. It is such a good feeling to make a decision on the fly to accommodate a client – to make them feel a little better. I am not bound to corporate rules and policies. Each client can receive individual and customized services. As a small business and with the relationships built with clients, we can easily add items to the menu that have presented a need. For example, we are working on a protocol for tired feet and legs for nurses, servers, teachers, or anyone else on their feet all day. My sister kept her corporate job, but she is the bookkeeper for the spa and assists in any office items we need. She also takes care of the license/ renewals and payroll – general business and professional.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
What most people may not know about me is that I am a single mother to 13 year old twin girls. It has been an amazing journey to watch them grow and show them that anything is possible when you work hard and follow your dream. It is important to show the balance between business and home life. As a mother, I try to lead by example. The girls swim competitively with practice six days a week and swim meets once a month. We balance life, and some days are scheduled down to the minute to keep everyone’s goals a priority.
