Today we’d like to introduce you to Edwin Harris.
Hi Edwin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started barbering in a small town (Schenectady NY) at Cuts & Blends Barbershop. Here is where I developed my passion for Barbering. We had to be so detailed with our edge-up lines. The fades had to blend so well. You can” t see where the fade begins or ends. Seeking more out of BarberingBarbering, I relocated to Atlanta. In Atlanta, I learned to become a multicultural Master Barber that provided luxury barber services. Clipper cuts, scissor cuts, and Hot towel razor shaves. The educators that taught me these skills are Groomed ATL (Kevin Dunn) and The Art of Shaving. These two places helped me grow mentally and skillfully. I was working at The Art of Shaving full time and ATL Groomed on my days off. I worked a lot, but I knew to make more to provide for my family, I had to grind and stay faithful. Going on my second year with the Art of Shaving, I got the opportunity of a lifetime. Disney was opening a new location in Disney Springs. I remember taking my kids to five guys to break the news!
Once I got to Florida, I hit the ground running. I went from being the barber on the bottom of the sales report to the company’s top barber. I was loving life. The most challenging thing I had to deal with that year was losing my father a month after I got to Disney. It was bittersweet because it was my dad’s favorite place to vacation. I knew he was watching over me, rooting me on from his sky view. I would go onto becoming the Art of Shaving’s most decorated Master Barber. I’m in a Disney Springs commercial that still runs in their hotels today. I got nominated twice to advise on best practices while using products. I was even selected to give the best summer cuts to wear in a GQ article. The cherry on the cake was The Art of Shaving made me their Lead Master Barber. Now I was responsible for training new barbers and barber trainers. I would meet people worldwide, Dubai, London, Brazil, Ireland, Puerto Rico, and all over us. My best visitor was from Trinidad. A wife planned a Barber spa day for her husband at the wrong location. They called over to our location to see if we could accommodate them. While enjoying his service with me, he asked a question I’ve heard a few times at my Disney location. If he opened a Barbershop, would I come and train his Barbers. A few months had gone by since I last spoke with him. On my day off, I kept receiving calls from Trinidad. I thought it was telemarketing, so I didn’t answer.
My co-worker texted me that a gentleman called for me and said it was important I call him back. I found myself at the number one store for The Art of Shaving, and now I’m training barbers internationally. Later that year, I left my corporate job for a new Barber spa opening in Lake Nona Orlando.JACQ & JACK This shop was edgy but clean. I signed on with them to be their lead Master Barber and Trainer. By the end of my second year, I was asked to leave. In an attempt to keep my good fortune going, I then relocated to downtown Orlando. Bringing my Good energy and strong faith, I believed I could rebound again.
I failed, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. I’d show up early, stay late, and I’d even come in on my days off. It seemed like a bad dream, I wasn’t making ends meet and COVID was on the rise. Once COVID forced salons and Barbershops to close, I was out of a job again. AVEDA, Orlando reached out to me to see if I would become their distance learning Master barber educator. From March till July, I worked for Aveda as an educator three days a week and on my day off I’d travel to my clients to service them. In June, right when it started getting too hot to cut outside. My client Tom O’Brien reached out to me because he hadn’t gotten a haircut since march. He informed me the prior owners moved on and wouldn’t be returning. I enquired about the space thru Tom O’Brien and Greg walker. By August 1, 2020, “The Master Barber Experience” was born.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The Road has shown ups and downs. But I knew once I left corporate BarberingBarbering, it was going to be a little bumpy. Being let go was the biggest struggle. At that point, I thought I failed my family. Being grounded and knowing where my strength comes from is what kept me focused.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I help build visual confidence thru the power of a haircut and shave. I specialize in Luxury Barber services that have you feeling Rejuvenated. I’m known for having good attention to detail. When I’m Your Master Barber, how you look when your done is all that matters. Having this opportunity to Establish “The Master Barber Experience.” With my passion and high energy, I love to bring work. I have a saying I love to use “Once you cross the line, your all mine because once you leave our shop, now you have to spoil yourself.
