Life & Work with Hollie K. Henry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hollie K. Henry.

Hi Hollie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My passion for makeup artistry and skincare started around 2014 after a personal struggle with hormonal acne. My background is in education; I taught elementary school for 11 years. As an educator, I was drawn to studying the history and science of products. I had tapped into a new passion! I decided to start freelancing as a makeup artist in 2015. My first real opportunity to work with a client was for an editorial photo shoot. I was not prepared at all! Thankfully, the friend and mentor who referred me provided me with the products I would need. The images from that shoot are some of my favorites unto this day. I collaborated with photographers and models as much as possible. I also became a member of a team that specializes in makeup and hair for pageants.

In 2016 I decided to go to esthetics school. I wanted to add to my knowledge base and skill set. I resigned from teaching full time so I could go to school. I had big dreams and no solid plan. You live and you learn. Life happened and I could not attend and went back to teaching. I continued to freelance, but the vision became clearer. I graduated from esthetics school in 2019, top of my class and became a licensed esthetician in the state of Florida, all while teaching full time. After graduation, I made a promise to myself that I would leap from my comfort zone of the classroom and go into the field of esthetics full time. The plan was to teach one more school year. A whole year to plan. Perfect! Then the pandemic showed up. I decided to still take the leap of faith and pursue a career in the industry full-time. Presently, I have my own business, Hollie K., LLC that focuses on makeup artistry, I am a makeup instructor at Elise Esthetics Institute (the school I graduated from), and I am in the process of working on a second business that caters to the esthetics and beauty industry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth the entire journey, but that presents opportunities to learn and grow. Early on, one of the things I struggled with was being concerned about others’ opinions in regard to changing careers. You cannot live life like that. God blesses us with gifts. How dare I not use them and do what truly brings me joy because I am concerned about the opinion of others. Building a successful business takes time and commitment. There will be smooth and challenging days, but you will push through those struggles if it is something you really want. I left the security of a nine to five for the unknown during a Pandemic. (Go me lol!) The pandemic of course, was not planned, however the timing could not have been better. Also, finding the balance between entrepreneurship and creativity can be a struggle. It may require many late nights, lots of reading, and some trial and error, but it is so worth it! It is important to celebrate along the way. I strive for perfection and nothing is wrong with having high standards, but I have learned that every step in my journey deserves to be celebrated.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional makeup artist and licensed esthetician. My business, Hollie K. LLC specializes in natural glam makeup with a focus on providing applications catered to client’s individual skin type and concerns. I provide one on one and group education for skincare and makeup artistry, which includes theory and hands-on application. I pride myself on providing quality customer service and building relationships with my clients. You are more than a number or another face to me. My goal is for every person I encounter to remember that they are wonderfully made.
