Life & Work with Kalyssa Makeup

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalyssa Makeup.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I remember seeing my mom use this MAC clear lipglass when I was in about 4th grade. It made her lips so shiny and juicy. I thought that was the most luxurious product in the world and I wanted one. After begging her to use some almost everyday before school, she finally gave in & let me keep hers. I became obsessed.

A few years later, in my sophomore year of high school, I found YouTube and the wonders that makeup did and most importantly, how it seemed to make the girls & boys I’d see in the videos feel when they were all done. Around that same time, I hurt myself in school one day and was refined to staying at home until I recovered. That made me really depressed. While I was home and after I finished all of my school work, I would watch YouTube makeup tutorials and this seemed to take me out of my depression. My mom noticed too, and she went to ULTA Beauty one day after work and spent about $500 in new makeup for me to practice with. I had her buy almost everything Nicole Guerriero recommended in her videos (my favorite YouTuber then & now). From then on, I started practicing every day, and I got better and better at it. My classmates started to notice, and even family members wanted me to do their makeup.

I gained professional experience while working for well-known makeup brands, and in 2017, I finally got the courage to start a YouTube channel and have been doing that for the past four years. In 2020 when the pandemic hit, I honestly feel it changed everyone’s life. Being in quarantine and at home for so long was foreign to me, but Tik Tok became extremely popular, and honestly, it made my days inside feel a little more brighter. I currently have my biggest following on Tik Tok and it ignited my love for creating beautiful looks and videos. I’d love to make social media a career because it truly brings me joy. I feel like I can be myself, I can be creative, and I can be a light in a place that can get really dark sometimes. Social media can be negative space and creates a toxic environment for users, and I want to bring positivity, joy, and beauty to the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, and I’m still struggling now. Some people in my life are not very supportive. Those people say I have talent but that social media can’t take me to places that being a Doctor or Engineer or Lawyer can. Financially it has also been hard to invest in great lighting, camera, and buying a product to review and make videos with when in the beginning you aren’t making money from it. But with hard work, perseverance, and not giving up, I know I can achieve what my heart truly desires. I know it’s not going to be easy, so I just have to enjoy all the ups & downs along the way to where I want to be.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I make social media content for fun and that’s what I am most known for. I’d love to make it into a full career, and I’m working towards that everyday. Currently, I’m a student and hold a bachelor’s degree in health sciences. I also work for makeup brands in places like Sephora and ULTA beauty when I’m not in school or filming videos. What I am most proud of is that I haven’t lost what truly makes me happy. Even though it’s hard some days to be confident of the future, I know I’m on the right track.

What I feel sets me apart from others is that I bring diversity to the things that I do. I’m not just one thing. I’m not just a student. I’m not just a makeup artist. I’m a beauty lover who happens to love music. I’m a music lover who happens to sing. I’m a singer who happens to love acting. I’m multi-faceted and I think that is what sets me apart. I also love that I’m different looking. I’m plus-sized and have wild curl brown hair that stems from my Latin roots. I love that not only can I share my love for beauty, but I can also spread body positivity and show people that it’s okay to be different, to look different, and also to feel a little lost at times (or all the time). If you don’t lose yourself, you’ll never find yourself.

What matters most to you? Why?
Love, trust, and spreading kindness. Family and friends are really important to me. But also, oneness is really important to me too. You can’t love someone fully if you don’t fully love yourself. You can’t put trust into someone fully if you lack trust within you. And you can’t spread kindness if you don’t treat yourself kindly.
