Life & Work with Lani

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lani.

Hi Lani, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a full-time mother and I work as a Digital Communicator during the day. I was born on an island, moved to MA in 2012 and Orlando in 2016. Baking has been my hobby for a long time and my baking inspiration is all thanks to my grandma who was a cake designer/ baking instructor. I have been baking since I was a kid with guidance from her and my mom. All my cake recipes are my grandma’s originals. I started off by baking cakes for my family and friends. Lani’s Cakery came to life when I was home during maternity leave a couple of years ago. I started the Lani’s Cakery Instagram page in 2019 and started posting pictures of all the cakes I made. Slowly, it went from baking for family and friends to customers. Cakes are my favorite sweet. The taste of a cake means everything to me! This is why I love creating sweet memories and spreading happiness with my customers one bite at a time!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It was more of a challenging road, but I love challenges. When I moved to Florida it was a new state and also a new market for me. When I decided to start Lani’s Cakery in 2019, I had to learn – not only about the market, but also how to find my vendors, customers, and everything that goes behind the scenes of a cake. I am so grateful for my husband, who has lived most of his life in FL and had a great small-business background experience. He has helped me through the challenging road tremendously and we are still learning about the small-business world together, especially after having a small-business during a pandemic.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to think of myself as a creative artist more than a baker. When I was growing up, my grandma used to make all my birthday cakes, and I remember telling her that I want a unique cake and I do not want to have a cake design that someone else had or she made for another customer. Now I want to do the same for my customers. When I get a request, I try to make it unique and special for each person. Of course, some of the requests I get will be to make the exact same cake they saw on IG or Google. But even then, I try to make it unique by adding a special Lani touch. And all our products are made-from-scratch using real ingredients. I believe this is what sets me apart from others. Even though the designs are one-of-a-kind, my recipes are my grandma’s originals and they come with the special ingredient of love. I believe my customers can feel it through the cakes. I make cakes, cupcakes and cake jars. My specialty is loaded cupcakes. These were created so I can combine a few of my favorite desserts into one. “Customer favorites” change every month and sometimes every week. Recently our best sellers have become vanilla cake, funfetti cake, and red velvet cake.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I am more of a risk analyzer than a risk taker. However my husband is a risk-taker and he motivates me greatly to take risks and try new things with Lani’s Cakery. I love to analyze the situation to see whether the risk I am about to take will work or not. I think that was the main reason Lani’s Cakery took a slow and steady path. However, opening a small business in a completely new market was the biggest risk I have taken.
