Life & Work with Malik Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Williams.

Hi Malik, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Long Island, NY, with a very creative family. Most have played a part in the music/entertainment industry in some aspect so when it came to picking a career, it was an easy choice of what I wanted to do. After graduating high school in 2011, I moved here to Orlando, FL, to attend Full Sail University in their Bachelor’s program for Recording Arts. Through that experience, I gained a love and respect for all types of media. After graduating in 2014, I started doing freelance audio work while brushing up my skills in film, video editing, and graphic design. In 2019, I officially started my media business, where I focus on video and audio editing.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I think when you follow a dream, you have to hit speed bumps in order to grow and sustain. Some of my struggles include money, self-doubt, loss (family & friends), doubt from peers and family, and keeping my faith through it all.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started my media company (Jelani Malik Creative) in 2019. I focus on audio and video editing for are types of creative content, as well as some graphic design. I’ve been able to work with some great people and gained relationships for a lifetime. The work that I’m most proud of is the content that gives back and uplifts the viewer. In 2020, I was blessed with the opportunity to produce an online camp called “ARMED: A Black Boys Blueprint For Living In America”. With the social unrest in 2020, Dr. Keita Joy birthed the idea and brought me on to bring the content to life.

Over 2000 families from all over the country signed their boys (and girls) up for the 8-week camp that taught them basic skills in communication and getting prepared for success in the real world. I also am a cohost on a podcast called 4 Men By Men. It’s a podcast myself and a few friends (Reje Rush of NATIV LENS, Drexler James of For The Love of Food, and Michael Apparicio) started in 2020 about the journey to authentic manhood. We realized that we live in a culture where most men don’t have a place to talk. We bring the conversations to the table and encourage our listeners to continue the conversation in their circles. I believe what sets me apart from others is my dedication to excellence. While that may come off as cocky, I just mean that I’m dedicated to bringing my clients’ stories to life in a way they never dreamed. I want them to feel a deep connection to their content even after the “idea phase.”

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
People are continually trying to find ways to be entertained or informed through media. I believe the media industry is growing at an amazing pace, especially with the major world changes over the last year.
