Today we’d like to introduce you to Rafael Ferreira.
Hi Rafael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In my sophomore year of high school, I signed up for a photography class. I had fun working on projects that my teacher assigned (shout out to Mr. K if he ever reads this!) I signed up for the second part of the class my junior year and that was a blast too. After taking those, I stopped exploring/practicing photography as a whole. I always wanted a camera but just never put in the work to get it. Around October of 2019, I would talk to one of my closest friends, Melanie, about wanting to dive back into photography and potentially making it a business. She lent me her camera and my first couples shoot ever was herself and her boyfriend Colton. I was super nervous and when it came to editing, let’s just say they looked like Oompa Loompas.
After that, I started practicing and would keep practicing with couples I know. I never was completely satisfied with my photography. It came with a lot of doubts and uncertainty. Which I think every photographer/creative struggles with. I starting falling in love with the whole process from beginning to end, meeting my clients, planning sessions, shooting the session, and editing. I started taking my photography seriously around the end of 2020. With everything that has been going on surrounding COVID, it made me start thinking and putting things into perspective of how much I love and appreciate that I can tell a story through my photos but bring it to life once again. Reliving those moments brings me so much joy. Although I just started taking it seriously, I love every bit of it. I genuinely cannot wait to see what else the future holds!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it has never been a smooth road. There will always be obstacles along the way but the best think about facing them is that you are able to learn and overcome them. One of my struggles is editing, making sure everything is up to my standards. It is not just taking a photo and sending it to your client. There is so much more that goes into it. Another challenge is setting yourself apart from different photographers in your area, especially. Most likely, photographers tend to go to the same locations, do the same poses, etc. What I have learned is how to make that location unique to my style. Doing things that photographers haven’t before and going above and beyond. At the end of the day, these photos are not for me. They are for people, just like you and me, wanting to capture beautiful moments and milestones. Which is one of the many reasons I love to go above and beyond for my couples and make sure they have the most beautiful photographs that will be cherished forever.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in just capturing people’s lives ‘ biggest moments. That can be from maternity sessions, family sessions, engagement/couple sessions, and weddings. From tears to dancing, and everything in between. Capturing the most intimate moments and all the feelings that accompany them is what I love to do. Those effortless moments bring me joy and to think I can do that is the best feeling in the world. Not only am I proud of the photos I am able to provide for my clients, but building genuine and trusting relationships with my couples is what I love the most. Just to think that someone trusts me that much to capture milestones from engagement photos all the way up to weddings is just so wild to me and I love it wholeheartedly.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Not at the moment! I do tend to get inspiration from movies, books, and music!
