Life & Work with Rudy Montilla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Montilla

Hi Rudy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
One day, I asked my wife, Marta, what she wanted to be when she grew up. She looked at me and said a photographer. I immediately thought of National Geographic or being a Press Photographer. Little did I know that she wanted to be a portrait photographer and a wedding photographer. That’s when Rudy & Marta Photography was born. Over time, we started photographing anything and everything that we could photography. Then one summer, a friend asked us to photograph their wedding. The rush that came from that was huge. We loved every aspect of it. The most important thing that we loved about it was the raw, honest emotions that people evoke on their wedding day. Dad crying when they see their daughter in their wedding dress. The groom’s reaction when he sees their significant other down the aisle. The smiles, laughter, and tears of the newlyweds finally getting to the ceremony. All those moments, all those emotions, all of it is real. All of it is true. We’ve been photographing weddings for over ten years. We’ve been to hundreds of weddings. Every single one of them different. Every single one of the couples different. And every single story was different.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think that the strongest “struggle” we had growing was finding our true selves as photographers. Everyone has a specific style and eye when it comes to how they photograph their subjects. For us, we slowly figured out that we wanted to ensure that people felt comfortable. We learned that most of our couples got the most genuine, natural, and organic portraits when they felt comfortable. Learning how to do that was no easy task, but we’re still learning today. We’re still trying to be better photographers than we were the day before.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We’re a husband and wife wedding photography duo. We specialize in organic and natural photos of couples on their wedding day. We’re known for capturing candid, natural photos of couples with their comfort being the forefront of our entire process. I am most proud of our diversity and inclusiveness. We all come from different backgrounds, but in the end, we are all humans. The union of marriage, no matter what background you have, should be celebrated. Finding someone that just gets you is something special. And photographs of all of that celebration should reflect the joy and love that’s had on that day.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
We look at our relationships with our couples like every other relationship. The most important thing when it comes to every relationship falls down to this: communication. Communication about what to expect. Communication about what we do. Communication about everything. It’s important.
