Life & Work with Cris and Seni of Alotl Dreams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cris and Seni Alotl Dreams.

Hi Cris and Seni, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Alotl Dreams started a few years ago when we decided to get into exotic pets. We were trying to figure out what would be a great start and what would be unique. We started with different reptiles, like Splice the Legless lizard, some snakes, geckos and then we got our first axolotls, Phoenix and Morpheus (which are our axolotls on our logo). Once we decided on axolotls, we wanted to learn as much as possible about these beautiful aquatic salamanders. We quickly realized there was a lot of contradicting information out there and wanted to educate ourselves on their proper husbandry. After we learned about their care and husbandry requirements, we began learning about their genetics and unique characteristics. It was so fascinating that we decided to get into breeding ourselves.

Once we had our first clutch, we went into business mode. Getting into exotic animals can be extremely costly from set up to maintenance. Our goal was to connect people with beautiful, quality creatures at an affordable price. We began selling locally advertising on FaceBook and Instagram. We connected with local, reputable pet stores as well but we really got our name out there once we vended at Repticon. There we were able to network with other vendors and connect with our customers face to face. With each show, our focus has been to educate and share as much information as possible so that our customers feel confident and capable to care for their new exotic pet.

Our brand is about education, connection and fun. Our booth is bright, filled with music, interactive games and raffles, and lots of energy. As sisters, we wanted to create a business that we could share with our kids and family.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
From our experience, it’s been extremely positive. We have been able to find the right connections. Everyone has been extremely helpful and doors have been opened for us to expand. We use any struggles as opportunities for growth and to strengthen and manage our business more effectively. As educators, we are constantly learning and improving.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Cris – I have worked in Education for eight years. Both in and out of the classroom and have over five years of vet assisting and technician experience. I currently work for Orange County Public schools as a 2nd grade teacher.

Seni – I have worked in the hospital system as a registered nurse for eight years and am currently working as a Nursing Professor at a college in Orange County, Fl.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
One of the best things we have found is to connect with other local vendors for best practices on how to build your business. The exotic animal community has shown to be very welcoming. We have gotten a lot of helpful information and useful tips that we have adapted and passed on to our customers.
