Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Austin.
Hi Brittany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a little girl, I always loved being organized, around/in clean environments & loved music of all genres. As I grew up, my mother & godmother always kept clean & tidy houses, which I enjoyed assisting with & we were always awakened on Saturdays to old school music and cleaning. Fast forward a little, I became a single mother of two after graduating high school.
I always raised my kids to learn how to do their chores & keep a tidy, organized space so if something ever happened to me, they wouldn’t be much of a burden to anyone. I live in low income for a few years, relied on government assistance & more to help take care of my kids all while still juggling several jobs at a time. All the while, I always made sure my home was clean, organized & the same for my family. In the early 2010’s one of my sisters was diagnosed with a crippling disease while also a mother of two young girls that required me to make a huge decision of uprooting my own two kids from our comfortable little apartment to go live in a much smaller two bedroom to care for my sister. While caring for my sister, I realized that her living condition had somewhat went down because her kids were young and she was basically bed-ridden and I knew I had to do something about that as that was affecting her health also. This is where I truly began realizing that my passion for cleaning & organizing for others was much needed. I did this for several people at no charge because all I wanted to do was help and make sure everyone else was taken care of. I took care of my sister and her kids for a while, even in the uncomfortable small space that was allotted to me & my kids. I slept on the couch while my kids shared a bunk bed with my nieces. I made sure everyone was fed & dressed in the am, my sister’s meds were given, her bandages were changed, her hygiene was taken care of before I went to work daily. I checked on her and gave meds during my lunch breaks & came home in the evening to get everyone prepped for the next day while preparing dinner also.
Around 2016, I had a friend share with me that I needed to look into starting a business for cleaning & organizing since I loved doing it and was basically working for free. It sounded really good but never did I think I could accomplish such a thing especially being a young black single mother of 2 at the time, living life paycheck to paycheck. I dared not give up that security blanket. During the years, I let that dream go by the waste side while still cleaning & organizing for free during what downtime I could find in my busy schedule. Fast forward to early March 2018, I took a leap of faith and set my passion up as an LLC and began charging for my services. I started out very low because I had no clue how to charge and I wanted to get clients. As I gained clients, I began to ask them to start leaving me reviews on my social media page which didn’t really happen but I kept going. I started gaining referrals from word of mouth due to a lot of the free work I had done before and also from people on social media that I’ve never even cleaned for. My personality, character and morals had always shown throughout my life, especially as a single mother so many people that I knew spoke up for me and shared my content.
As I am trying to grow my cleaning business, I am still working FT in Corporate America, taking care of my kids and much more. I would clean as soon as I got off work until late at night sometimes and my kids wouldn’t see me until the next day when I woke them up for school and did the same thing all over again. I failed to mention by this time, I had become a mother of three with little support from the other side but I kept going. My 3 Z’s (my kids) have always been my motivation & reasons. I can go on and on and would love to tell more of my story to The Voyager. I would like to end with a huge highlight of being able to completely leave my Corporate America job of 13 years back in late October 2020 to pursue my cleaning business FT & also grow/pursue my Mobile Notary/Loan Signing Agent business as well. Both are growing daily and keeping me busy alongside being a mother and I am happier than ever. I soon look forward to putting my journey as a single Black mother into a book to share with others that look like me and have been/are going through what I’ve endured to let them know….they can do anything they put their minds too!!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Here a few that truly stand out to me: Single mother. Juggling several jobs at once. Not believing in myself. Self-esteem low because of the stigma of having multiple children with multiple fathers. Feeling alone. Not having a great relationship with my father. Always feeling things have to be perfect before I pursue them having to rely on government assistance.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
