Meet Christopher Burnam of House of Chick’n

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Burnam

Hi Christopher, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory
Over 10 years ago my family and I used to do a fast where we wouldn’t eat any meat for 30 days. And after the fast was over I would “run” to Publix and get a bag of their fried chicken along with some Hawaiian rolls and hot sauce and go to town LOL. One year I went through the same process but this time when I bit into the chicken, it was RAW and uncooked. From the moment I took that bite, I decided that I would never eat an animal that walked on land. I still ate seafood and fish because I decided that if I couldn’t catch and kill my food then I couldn’t eat the food. And about 7 years later I decided that nothing that was living should be eaten. Then I started to do more and more research on the negative aspects of killing and consuming animals, so I decided that I would become vegan. I also knew that Black folks were impacted by so many preventable dietary diseases and I knew that a vegan lifestyle was the best way to help and prevent those diseases. Also with the more research that I did, I realized that people just didn’t understand veganism. Once I decided to become vegan I know that the best way to help people make the transition was to create products that can be the conduit between eating meat and just eating grass (what most people think that vegans only eat). So I began to create all different kinds of vegan meals and foods. I really started to focus on Soul Food because I knew that if Black people could see that we could eat food that connected with our culture without the negative health impact it would make it easier to become vegan or at least began the journey. As I started to make more meals/products I began to do pop-ups where I would serve this food and as the popularity of my company grew I decided to leave my “9-5” job and do this full-time. I knew my purpose was not only to create a great product but also one that could be life-changing. Through all the products that I created I started to focus on Plant-based chicken knowing that was needed in the market.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with life, my journey has had its ups and downs, challenges, and opportunities. I have always been able to create, making something out of nothing. My background has always been in sales of I’ve always known how to find a need for people and fill it. So I knew that I always had the skills to be an entrepreneur, and I have never had any fears about doing something big and leaving a legacy for my family. But because I didn’t have any entrepreneurs in my family or close to me I have always had to do the research and look for mentors. I am a lover of knowledge so I will never stop learning or seeking the knowledge. The biddest struggle has been financing the business. I understand that it is a part of the journey and I see the end of the journey is the legacy that I will one say leave. So I continue to stay focused and earn the revenue that needs to push and move forward.
