Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Jae Wilber.
Hi Devin Jae, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started like most mom-tographers, just hoping to get one good picture of their child as they ran by at the playground. I practiced on my kids, on my friend’s families, on our pets; but once my father passed away photography took on a whole new meaning to me. That amount of pictures I had of my father and with my father were the only pictures there would ever be for the rest of my life. I wanted to be able to bring those memories to my clients and for them to always have those precious times. Photography has brought so much to my life. It’s allowed me to be creative, own my own business, be a present parent, and make some awesome friends in my clients.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s not always been a smooth road. About two years ago, my youngest child was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and my world was turned upside down. The sudden realization that I didn’t know what the future was going to hold for my child or what I needed to do to help my child greatly affected me which in turn affected my photography business. I no longer felt creative, it was hard to muster the strength to have fun and be excited for other families when I was elbow deep in grief. Last September, we learned that my daughter has a genetic mutation called Phelan – McDermid Syndrome but we’ve all come so far on this journey it’s just one more piece to her puzzle and being able to be creative and excited about photography again has helped so much.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have two specialties in photography. I have a family business that is an outdoor – natural light family photography and then I have a wedding photography business with my best friend. I’m most proud of the experience I am able to provide for my clients. There are photographers would can pose you and take a good picture but I love for my clients to laugh, play, and make awesome memories.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Take the pictures, hire the photographers, make memories with your family. It doesn’t matter if you’re not your perfect weight or if the planets aren’t aligned correctly. One day that’s all your children will have of you.
