Today we’d like to introduce you to Edson Smitter.
Hi Edson, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a graphic designer and photographer from Venezuela based in Miami. I’ve been working as a freelance in advertising agencies for 15 years, creating campaigns and graphic art. I came to Miami in 2015, being a tough year practically starting from scratch, working in a pizzeria and as a bartender. After a year, I managed to open my photography studio in which I still continue today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have had my ups and downs, the first years being a bit unstable due to the frequency of jobs in photography. I currently have several clients that I work with on a monthly basis, and they have helped me get my business off the ground.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My specialty is a fashion and advertising photography, although I have done quite a bit as a wedding photographer and videographer. Much of my current work is focused on product, fashion and portrait photography. I am also working on more personal artistic projects, seeking to convey feelings through photographic portraiture and film.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I am currently listening to some podcasts about cinema: The Projection Booth and The Empire Film Podcast, among others. Also, photography tutorials by Joel grime and Karl Taylor. The books I am currently reading are The mind’s eye by Henry Cartier Bresson and From the earth to the moon by Jules Verne. I also relax my mind a bit with some video games.
