Meet Frances “Frankie” Wright

Frances “Frankie”, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my journey when I was 11 years old. I started with my aunt who would always ask me to do her hair, she always complimented how well I did her hair and how well the styled maintained days later. I moved on to doing my hair along with my mother and other family members as well as friends. It started out as fun to be able to create such amazing styles. As time went on, my love and desire for doing hair grow. I didn’t know where to start at first or even if I would be any good professionally or even if I would be successful. So, in 2009 when I was laid off from my job, I decided to take the leap of faith and not look for another job but instead, to enroll in school full time. Being a single mother with two kids and all the responsibilities that come with it made it a very difficult decision, but I knew it was now or never.

I was in school for nine months; a total of 1200 hrs to complete the cosmetology course and even more hours studying and preparing for the exam. I have to admit, it was hard and challenging, but I was committed to not give up or quit, neither was an option. I tried working while in school but it was extremely too much. My day went like this: I was up at 7:00am to get my daughter’s up and ready for school, out of the house by 8:15am to drop my daughter’s off to school and in class myself at 9:30am, class was over at 3:30. I picked my daughter’s up from school and home by 4:30pm, did homework, made dinner, got them ready for bed, I would leave at 9:15pm and drop them off to my cousin. I would have to be at work from 10pm until 7am and start my day all over again. I eventually quit that job and focused on school. Going back to school literally cost me everything. I lost my home and my car but I was determined by the view of where this career could take me.

I finished school when I was scheduled to; now it was time to build in this career for real. This is where more testing had taken place, it was a slow start but I was determined to win, I showed up everyday ready to work even when I didn’t have a client. I would ask other stylists questions and watch how they Interacted with new clients and even clients they already had. I took a lot of notes on do’s and don’ts. Some weeks I only made enough to pay booth rent and put maybe $10 worth of gas. It was hard but again “Determination” and my Vision helped me to make it here. Through all of the hard work that I put in, the mentors, classes, teachings and experiences seven years later, I was able to take a dream and make it a reality. In 2017, I opened my full-service Salon “Styled Just Wright”.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This road has not been smooth, but it is worth it. I have experienced loss of friends, money and even trust. I have experienced attacks on my character, I’ve even had to put out a lot of money for things that were not my responsibility nor my fault. I had to smile when there was absolutely nothing to smile about. But my faith in God encouraged me everyday to believe that everything was working together for my good. God has graced me with staff who partner with my vision and helped the company grow in ways that I could not do alone.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Licensed Cosmetologist, I specialize in Healthy Hair care. I am known for my Bomb Silk Press and the ability to bring hair back to its healthy state. Additionally, I am a speaker and coach. I am most proud of the fact that I never gave up even when I had every reason to, that I never allow anyone to put me in a box of who they thought I should be and do. I’m proud that whatever I placed my hands to do, I was able to do it and do it with excellence. What sets me apart is that I don’t forget that people are still human and everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, and with this principle it has allowed me to be very personable with my clients. My love for hair has become my love for people.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
