Today we’d like to introduce you to Larissa Humiston.
Hi Larissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started dancing at age three in Upstate New York, where I fell in love with Vaganova Ballet. I continued to study ballet, jazz, and tap dance. In college is where I found modern and contemporary dance and was able to utilize my skills in ballet as well. I continued dancing and teaching dance throughout college and graduate school. When I moved back to Florida after graduate school, I started Emotions Dance Inc in 2007. Our focus was on social and environmental awareness through performance. My work as a psychotherapist assisted with some of these themes. In 2015 I also opened a dance training facility for ages two through adult to be able to bring dance education to the area.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No. I had to fund the company, performances and take out loans and grants for the studio. I have had to work tirelessly, close to 80/90 hours a week at times, to be able to keep the company and studio going. I have had to teach myself everything from marketing to web design, to strategic planning etc. Now with COVID, there are even more challenges facing the arts and my company.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work as a psychotherapist during the day, helping clients work through issues such as anxiety, depression, grief and bereavement, and personality disorders. At night, I am the dancer, the creative, the educator. I love teaching the kids and watching their amazement when they first “get” a movement. I love being creative with my professional company and watching them move in ways my body never could.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Being versatile and willing to push myself. Without these qualities, I would have never gotten as far as I have thus far.
