Meet Marina Parries of Kissimmee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Parries.

Hi Marina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began in Trinidad and Tobago. I lived there with my grandmother who thought me that you have to work hard for what you want and nothing in life comes free. Education was important and hard work pays off.

I moved to Orlando, FL when I was 17yrs old and was place directly into 12th grade September of 1996 and graduated May of 1997. I was literally in and out of Poniciana High School! Go Eagles! lol. That very summer I started my BA program at Valencia Community and finished it at Florida Metropolitan University in 2004.

Now I’m married to an amazing and extremely supportive husband by the name of Jayson. We have a blended family of four children: Aleia 20yrs, Dreikken 15 yrs, Velanah 10yrs and Jayson Jr. 5. Trust me when I say this wasn’t planned. In addition to being a Wife, a Mom and a CEO. I am also a Flight Attendant at a major airline since 2008.

I had no idea that today I would be calling myself a CEO of an All natural hair care and accessory brand called Natural Hair Really Rocks by MoeMo. MoeMo was the nickname given to me by my grandmother! It’s so funny to this day we still have no idea why she called me MoeMo. Nevertheless it stuck with me over the years. Because I am half Trinidadian and Dominican. I honestly believe that’s why my hair mixture is so unique and beautiful.

Once I started this journey I knew I had to run to YOUTUBE university to get as much help as possible. I soon discovered I had two hair types. Some days I could be a 4A & 4B and other days a 4A 4B & C. This was extremely challenging for me because I couldn’t find products that worked on my hair and they were getting costly to try multiple brands.

At that point I decided the cheapest way was to become a Hair Influencer like the people I was watching. So I called myself NHRR (Natural Hair Really Rocks). I even took the test and got my Braiding License for the State of Florida in 2020. A few willing souls trusted me with their natural hair and I was grateful. I braided hair, crocheted and others just wanted their natural hair either braided or twisted.
That journey wasn’t short lived. I got to help others and got free products from a lot of natural hair companies. It was seriously more than I could handle. The hair was one thing and the blogging was a beast by itself.

The work involved had me shaking my Head! Editing, posting, videos and reels. All about my experience with their products and whether I liked them or not. I also had a time limit on accomplishing these tasks. It went on and on. It was too overwhelming. I probably lasted a year. When I think about it, on top of all my other responsibilities I eventually said there has got to be a better way.

During this time I was struggling with keeping up with my daughter Velanah’s tender headedness. She cried every time it was washday. It became a drag and I was getting tired. I told her that, “maybe you might like your hair in dreadlocks”. She looked at me like, what’s that? Lol! She has an auntie that has dreads, so I told her just like your aunty Bynk. I proceeded to show her other kids like her that had dreads and she was amused. So for a whole month I left two strand twist in her hair and washed twice that month. When I tell you she loved it! Its so much easier on her scalp and she doesn’t look at getting her hair done as a punishment.

The second step was to confirm with her that this is something she really wanted to do and not that I wanted to make it easy for myself. However, this was going to beneficial for both of us. Once Velanah give the thumbs up, the third step was to lock it. I used the crochet needle method. Just incase you were wondering. Then the whole bandwagon wanted in on it. My then almost 4 year old wanted to same thing as his big sister and husband Jayson joined the team this year. So far it has been going great. Funny! My oldest son Dreikken and I have the same hair type and we are not Team Dreads, However we are very much Team Naturals.

Now that we were paying the bill on our own natural hair care products, I knew I needed to make a change. I was curious as the how much it would take to start my own hair care company. I mean I already had a name, a few clients and my families support. So I search a chemist that would help me develop an all natural, vegan friendly, family safe, chemical free, hair care brand. Wow! That was a mouthful! Pun intended!
I wanted to make sure what I was about to put in our hair, was the same and that we could all save money by using the same brand and not multiples. My research took me years. However, once I found the right company that was willing to create a brand that was toxic free, no dyes, no paragons, sulfates or silicones. It was a ,catch made in heaven.

I called them my “Starting Seven”. I wanted to make sure I had a Family Friendly Line that everyone could benefit from. Our brand starts from ages 2 yrs and up.
I created Anti-Itch & Growth Serum, Smooth As Silk Co~Wash, Nutty Butta Twisting Cream, Soft Jelly Curls, Juices & Berries Curly Custard, Island Breeze Edge Control, Glorianna’s Pomade.

In creating these amazing products, I had a few things in mind. I wanted to make sure they were white flake free, toxin free and affordable. We just started out Private Labeling Vendors Program. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggle was and is real! Natural hair and all things natural, clean and non-toxin, is a billion dollar industry. My mean focus is to always cater to not only adults. I wanted to invent a hair brand for an entire family. So to create a brand like MoeMo’s wasn’t easy.

The easy part was getting the business off the ground. The struggle in keeping the business afloat is getting people to:
1. Trust you! But most importantly to trust that you are who you say you are.
2. Ensuring that your brand is in fact 100% safe for them and their precious little ones.
3. Leaving a brand they love already and step away from it and try yours
4. Stay loyal to you and keep coming back.

Another struggle I face is that MoeMo’s have a shelf life! Meaning that it will expire within a year. It should be kept in a cool environment. because they are made fresh to order with an expiration date. My goal is that you use it and come back for more. It should only last a month or so when used consistently.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Most people have no idea that one of my greatest passions since I was 19 years old is dancing.

When I first attended Valencia Community College it was as a dance major. I actually took private dance classes while attending college and worked. This became a bit too much as the curriculum and working demanded me to be at the school way more than I could . fortunately I was able to change majors, which made it easier for me to put myself through college and work at the same time.

I never lost my passion for dance so I ended up teaching and praise danced at my local church and community centers.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
The best thing I love about Orlando is of culture and people. To know that you’er allowed to express your own culture, diversity, differences and other participate in it, is amazing. I’m referring to Carnival of course. If you’ve never been you should. The food, music, colors and excited is everything.

Orlando makes me feel like home. I look at Orlando like a bite of a melting pot. I can honestly find anything and everything I need from my country right here.

Let’s not forget to mention to food. There are so many different restaurants around and the food trucks. Am sorry! Did I forget to mention am a foodie.
