Hi April, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had been in the retail/customer service industry for many years before having my two boys, so when I felt like it was time for me to head back into the working world, I wanted to continue what I had done before, but for myself, on my own terms. At the time, Winter Garden was up and coming in the younger adult/family generation so I started The Bulk Pantry as a small bulk food store, the type where you can come in and buy as little or as much as you’d like. The concept was based on lessening our carbon footprint in the world with less waste… whereas the concept was/is great, the business aspect of it wasn’t thriving as I had hoped. So thinking outside the box and honestly listening to what the community was asking for is what brought me to transforming a bulk food store into a specialty bakery! I had all the ingredients necessary to bake, and the community was yearning for a healthier alternative. Sugar-free, gluten-free, and low carb options are very hard to come by… so I slowly began baking specialty items and the rest is basically history. The doors were blown wide open and the business took off. I’ve always loved to bake and this proved helpful and made my job not so much a job!
The benefit I gain from being able to provide healthier options are endless… it is not just a lifestyle choice for some people, it’s a forced life change. Those who are diabetic, gluten intolerant, or even epileptics who manage their disease with a low-carb diet can all enjoy our goods without having to worry if it’s safe for them.
Today, we offer in store options, custom orders, deliveries to Walt Disney World guests, and even ship within the US.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been anything but a smooth road on this journey. Doing a startup business as one concept and totally changing to another is enough in itself. I am approaching my fourth year in business and have moved from my original location to my existing one. Along that journey, we have struggled as a small business during a pandemic, which to date is still ongoing. We are blessed to have a niche in the market but also a rock star customer basis that has continued to support small businesses.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a small specialty bakery in beautiful Historic Downtown Winter Garden. We bake on site and offer a variety of baked goods including Keto, Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free, and Vegan. We wholesale to a few places locally and hope to expand upon those vendors. We are our neighborhood bakery. We remember you. We remember your name. We remember the things you like. We pride ourselves on building personal relationships and still delivering stellar products and customer service.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people assume that because I bake Keto treats, that I follow the Keto lifestyle. I actually do not follow the Keto diet; not because I don’t believe in it, because I 100% believe that if done correctly, it’s hugely beneficial, but simply put… I LOVE FOOD! and any kind, keto or not! Now, would I prefer my own baked goods over highly sugared, highly processed store bought goods….you bet. I know exactly what goes in my goods and don’t need to worry about all the artificial junk.
