Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Spyrka.
Hi Autumn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you for having me, I’m excited to share my story with you!
Growing up, I always knew that my heart was in the world of art and fashion. I always played with hair and makeup on friends and family in high school but never really got serious with it until about 2014. Once I realized that I had a strong passion for the artistry and stories of the people I met, I decided to make a career out of it. I started by applying at multiple cosmetic brands and counters as I thought they would be a great way to get more experience about the business, trends and build a clientele. Unfortunately, multiple brands told me I wasn’t their “type” and turned me down, but MAC COSMETICS took a chance with me and thanks to them, my career as a makeup artist exploded from there. I briefly freelanced with them before they made me a permanent artist. Fast forward to now, I’m now a Retail Manager for them and run my own freelance company, Autumn Artistry on the side. I’ve worked with D list celebrities, fitness models, and the Orlando Magic Dancers, so I owe a huge amount of appreciation and gratitude to them for giving me a chance when no one else would.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Hard work pays off. It wasn’t easy, when you work in an environment predominantly filled with women, you can expect jealousy and cattiness. Trying to get your name out there in central Florida is harder than I think it would be in most states because there is a lot more competition; and like most businesses, it’s all about who you know. Another issue is that we are in a place and time where highly filtered photos are EVERYWHERE, it creates a false expectation in clients on what their skin will look like after having their makeup done, as well as decreases the value of our work and skill set.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My skill set went from simple bridal to full glam and backstage/editorial looks. If I had to choose what I’m best known for I’d say it would be bridal glam and smooth perfected skin. When I started my journey, I was all about the wild colors and heavy makeup, whereas now I take pride in my ability to bring out the natural beauty with a “less is more, love your skin” mentality. I think what sets me apart is that I didn’t know a single person in the business when I got started, I didn’t have anyone to teach me or help me get to where I am today and My support group was very small. After some time, I did make friends who encouraged me and gave me some pretty great feedback to help grow, but for the most part I did it on my own and pushed myself to be the artist and businesswoman I knew I was capable of, regardless of what my non-supporters had previously told me.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Something I would love to add is that it doesn’t matter where you came from. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the support you need from others, CHASE YOUR DREAMS. It won’t be easy, but the pride you will find in growing your own business from scratch and mainly on your own will encourage you to never stop chasing your dream to be the person you want to be and will inspire those around you to do the same.
