Rising Stars: Meet Denise Brown of Orlando

Hi Denise, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Contrary to my current love and use of makeup, I wasn’t exposed to very much makeup as a little girl, and being raised by Caribbean parents, I wasn’t allowed to wear much of it either. The most I knew about makeup was watching my mother apply her pressed foundation powder and red lipstick for special occasions. I was permitted to wear very basic makeup in high school, so my makeup consisted of the classic 90s finely drawn dark lip liner and clear lip gloss. I was introduced to the full gamut of makeup in 2011 shortly before finishing my graduate degree in mental health counseling. After being introduced to the makeup world, I had a natural inclination to want to learn more about the artistry. My initial focus was solely on self-application—learning the basics of foundation application, the benefits of highlighting and contouring, and the drastic difference a full pair of brows can make to your face. I began to nurture my skills and grow in my craft, and over time, I would go on to share those skills with other women by providing basic makeup services.

After several years of servicing the Central Florida area, I decided to create D. Ann-Marie Beauty in 2017. My mission is to enhance my clients’ beauty and boost confidence in their appearance while maintaining a natural finish. I want my clients to see their completed look and not feel like they’re hidden under the makeup, but rather that the makeup enhances their already beautiful features. Over the years, I’ve serviced women in different industries and roles—business owners, women in ministry, local music artists, best selling authors, models, brides, teens, and everyday women in between. As a result of the connections I’ve made in the beauty industry, I’ve also had the pleasure of working alongside other talented artists and stylists for various causes and community events in the Orlando area. Now that I’ve mastered the fundamentals of makeup application, my new found love and focus are on the artistry of perfecting the skin’s look—that flawless finish that mimics a natural born-this-way look. Creating a flawless skin-like finish is the foundation of my artistry. It offers a timeless look and is ideal for special occasions that will have a lasting memory. My vision for D. Ann-Marie Beauty in the years to come is to build timeless looks that will be found in publications and personal photo albums for years to come. My artistry is ever-growing and developing, and I’m looking forward to where my new opportunities will take me.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I didn’t get my start, nor did I venture to work in a makeup/cosmetic store, so building my visibility and clientele posed the most challenges in the early years of my artistry. Several years ago, most women looking for makeup services typically went to their local cosmetic counter and paid an artist to do their makeup. With the growing popularity of social media platforms like Instagram, potential clients can search for local freelance artists by location. My current challenge is trying to remain relevant and sought after in a saturated field of service.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I provide a beauty-enhancing experience that maintains your features’ natural look. I’m most known for my natural makeup application and natural skin-like finish. My clientele consists of women who seek to get glammed without going over the top or getting lost behind the makeup. I’m most proud of the accomplishments I’ve made in my skill set and the people I’ve met and worked with throughout the years. I never imagined I’d be in the beauty industry, so I don’t take any moment for granted.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The makeup industry has exploded over the last ten years with the help of social media platforms. Over the next 5-10 years, I believe we’ll continue to see makeup artists, influencers and creatives emerge in the industry. We’ll also see more entrepreneurs creating makeup and accessory lines. The industry is becoming more inclusive of color ranges, so I hope we’ll continue to see major brands widen their spectrum of color options.
